In some gardens, many ancient longan trees have unique and unusual shapes, with trunks so large that two people cannot encircle them. According to the elderly people in this area, Mr. Truong Hung was the first person to bring the two longan varieties, Subic and Tu-huyt, from China to plant on the sandy soil of Bac Lieu . Both varieties adapted well to the soil, growing luxuriantly and producing large fruits with thin skins, crisp flesh, juicy and sweet pulp. It is from this that the name Giong Nhan (Longan Hill) was born.
Tourists can experience harvesting and eating longan fruit in the ancient longan orchard.
Many visitors say they come to the longan orchard to admire the appearance of the ancient longan trees, enjoy the delicious taste of the longan fruit, and immerse themselves in the peaceful natural scenery.
Ms. Le Huyen Tran, a native of Bac Lieu currently living in Ho Chi Minh City, shared: “Every time I visit my hometown, I go with my family to visit and enjoy the ancient longan orchards. I had the opportunity to work in Bac Lieu. I've eaten longan grown in many other places, but the flavor of Bac Lieu longan truly leaves a lasting impression on me.”
This area now boasts not only the rare Subic and Tu-huyt longan varieties, some of which are hundreds of years old, but also the golden-fleshed longan with thick, sweet, fragrant, and crispy flesh, considered the most delicious specialty of Bac Lieu province.
Notably, a new variety of longan, Thanh Nhan, has recently emerged, successfully created by Mrs. Tran Kieu (71 years old, also known as Mrs. Thanh), the owner of a large, traditional longan orchard in Giong Nhan A hamlet, Hiep Thanh commune, Bac Lieu city. This new, famously fragrant and delicious longan variety is named after Mrs. Thanh, hence the name Thanh Nhan. Currently, Thanh Nhan is popular with consumers, especially tourists .
Thanks to the successful grafting of Bac Lieu longan varieties onto native longan trees, the yield, appearance, and quality of longan have all improved, contributing to increased income after each harvest.
A lush longan orchard will be an ideal check-in spot to capture wonderful moments with family and friends.
The longan ripening season in the Giong Nhan area usually falls in late June and early July of the lunar calendar. Longan trees not only provide economic benefits to the people in Giong Nhan but also possess potential tourism value.
Here, visitors can not only enjoy the cool air but also savor the first longan fruits of the harvest season. Furthermore, the lush, ancient longan orchards are ideal photo spots, perfect for capturing wonderful moments with loved ones.
