New research finds benefits of coffee and tea for people with high blood pressure

High blood pressure can increase the risk of dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease. The good news is that scientists have just discovered a simple way to reduce this risk.

According to a new study recently published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports , moderate daily consumption of coffee and tea may help reduce the risk of dementia in people with high blood pressure .

People with high blood pressure who drink 0.5 to 1 cup of coffee a day have the lowest risk of developing dementia.

To investigate the link between coffee and tea consumption and the risk of dementia in people with high blood pressure, a team of scientists from the School of Public Health , Ningxia Medical University (China), conducted a study involving 453,913 participants with an average age of approximately 72, of whom more than 54% had high blood pressure. The participants were followed for over 15 years.

Researchers found that people with high blood pressure have a higher rate of dementia compared to those without high blood pressure.

The results showed that people with high blood pressure who drank 0.5-1 cup of coffee per day had the lowest risk of developing dementia. Readers can find more information about this article on the health page dated September 22nd.

Avocados are a 'superfood,' but which diseases require you to avoid eating them?

Avocados are often considered a 'superfood' because of their abundant nutritional content. Not only are they a good source of potassium, but avocados are also rich in fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats. While very healthy, avocados aren't suitable for everyone.

People with certain health conditions should avoid eating avocados. Some nutrients in avocados may pose health risks, ranging from drug interactions to worsening existing conditions.

People with kidney disease and acid reflux should avoid eating avocados.

Certain illnesses require avoiding avocados, including:

Blood clots. People with atrial fibrillation, blood clotting disorders, or those at risk of blood clots are often prescribed blood thinners. These medications help prevent blood clots from forming, thereby helping to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and pulmonary embolisms.

The medication works by reducing the effects of vitamin K in the body, thereby slowing down blood clotting. Some blood thinners, such as Warfarin, can interact with vitamin K. Therefore, patients should limit their intake of foods high in vitamin K, including avocados.

Kidney disease. People with early-stage kidney disease don't necessarily need to control their daily potassium intake. This is because at this stage, the kidneys can still process potassium in the blood effectively.

However, as kidney disease progresses to later stages, the kidneys' ability to filter potassium gradually decreases. This leads to potassium accumulation in the blood, resulting in the dangerous condition of hyperkalemia. Because avocados are rich in potassium, people with kidney disease need to be very cautious when consuming this fruit. Why do people in their 50s need to drink more water?

People of all ages need to drink enough water for optimal bodily function. However, older adults may need to drink more water than they did when they were younger, notes Jamie Koll, an American health coach.

There are several reasons why older adults need to drink even more water.

According to a 2023 study published in the scientific journal Nutrients , starting at age 40, the kidneys begin to lose their ability to retain water, making it difficult to maintain fluid balance in the body. And this decline accelerates after age 65.

Older adults may need to drink more water than they did when they were younger.

In addition to the gradual decline in kidney function mentioned above, here are some reasons why older adults are more susceptible to dehydration.

Medications. Older adults tend to take many medications that can cause dehydration, including:

Diabetes medications affect water retention levels because they cause more frequent urination. These medications, as well as laxatives, can also cause diarrhea, leading to dehydration.

Blood pressure medication can reduce the need for water intake and also has diuretic properties.

Age-related issues. A 2023 study in Nutrients further indicated that older adults may also find it difficult to move or have swallowing problems, making drinking water more challenging. Those with urinary incontinence often limit their water intake, and those with dementia may forget to drink enough water. Start your day with health news to read more in this article!
