Air conditioner usage errors can be harmful

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên10/05/2024

What do the experts say?

Experts say that a sudden drop in temperature from hot to cold can be harmful to the body, especially for those with chronic illnesses related to cold.

The sudden and extreme change in temperature between an air-conditioned room and the hot outdoors can be harmful to the body. It puts stress on the body as it is forced to adjust from being too hot to too cold, according to the Times of India.

Sự thay đổi đột ngột giữa nhiệt độ trong phòng máy lạnh và ngoài trời nắng nóng có thể gây hại cho cơ thể

The sudden change in temperature between an air-conditioned room and the hot, sunny outdoors can be harmful to the body.

This sudden temperature change can dry out the skin, mucous membranes, and eyes. Many people experience itchy eyes and sneezing as soon as they arrive at the office, possibly due to the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the outside. This can even lead to eye infections, respiratory infections, and muscle spasms.

Other problems that can occur due to sudden temperature drops or increases include runny nose, asthma attacks, muscle aches, sinusitis, flu, colds, sore throat, severe pain, and muscle soreness.

Similarly, when stepping out of an air-conditioned room, if the outside temperature is too hot, you should turn off the air conditioner for a while before going outside, according to the Times of India .

Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee of Apollo Hospital (India) said that the body needs time to adapt when moving from extremely hot to extremely cold temperatures or vice versa.

When there are sudden temperature changes, blood vessels are affected. Dr. Chatterjee explains that sudden temperature changes affect the temperature of blood vessels, which in turn affects the heart.

Temperature changes should be gradual to avoid affecting the body's systems. Sudden temperature changes can affect the immune system, which is why people often get sick or infected with viruses when the weather changes abruptly.

Dr. Romil Tikku, Max Hospital (India), says that sudden temperature changes can cause extreme discomfort for people with respiratory problems. Patients with asthma, sinusitis, and other respiratory issues may experience acute illnesses. Cardiac events in people with heart conditions can also occur.

Many people have a habit of turning on the air conditioner as soon as they enter the house.

Dr. Tarun Sahni of Apollo Hospital stated that sudden temperature changes disrupt the body's natural reflexes, impairing the brain's protective barrier. This, in turn, increases the risk of viral infections and allergies.

Spending too much time in an air-conditioned room can make you unable to tolerate the heat when you go outside. This can easily lead to exhaustion upon exposure to the outside temperature, potentially causing dizziness, fatigue, headaches, shortness of breath, or even heatstroke.

What should we do?

Avoid sudden transitions from very hot to very cold or from very cold to very hot.

If you need to go from an air-conditioned room to the outside, turn off the air conditioner for a while to allow your body to gradually adjust to the heat outside.

And when coming in from outside, don't turn on the air conditioner immediately; instead, switch to using a fan to cool down gradually before turning on the air conditioner, according to the Times of India.
