The reason why the grass at Hang Day Stadium is abnormally shrinking

VTC NewsVTC News30/03/2024

After a three-week break, the V.League 2023/24 returns with Round 14 matches. Tonight (March 30th), at Hang Day Stadium, The Cong Viettel will face Quang Nam FC on a pitch with a distinctly different surface compared to normal.

Spectators watching this match may have noticed an unusual change in the size of the playing field. The boundary lines at both ends of the field have been moved several meters further away from the edge of the grass compared to their usual position in previous matches. The width of the field has also been reduced.

The match between The Cong Viettel and Quang Nam took place on a pitch that was smaller than usual.

Explaining the change in pitch size, the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) stated that the reduced pitch size still meets the standards for competition according to the Laws of Football issued by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

This change was made to maintain the grass in the area in front of the goal near stand D and a portion of the grass along the sideline near the visiting team's technical cabin.

Representatives from Hanoi FC – one of the three clubs using Hang Day Stadium as their home ground – stated that the stadium management is addressing the issue of damaged turf around both goalposts. Additionally, several areas on the pitch have suffered serious subsidence and require renovation, replanting, and leveling of the ground.

The grass at Hang Day Stadium has many damaged areas, forcing the stadium management to temporarily reduce the size of the playing field.

Under favorable conditions, the pitch size of Hang Day Stadium will return to normal for the National Cup matches scheduled to take place at the end of April.

Currently, Hang Day Stadium is the home ground of three teams: Hanoi FC, Hanoi Police FC, and The Cong Viettel. According to the regulations of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), one of the three teams must move to a different stadium. However, the three clubs and the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) have not yet agreed on a solution.
