Recently, Ms. Nualphan Lamsam (Madam Pang), President of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT), visited and encouraged the Thai U23 team before the opening match against Timor Leste at the 33rd SEA Games.
Thailand’s men’s football team holds the record for winning 16 SEA Games gold medals – the most in the region. However, the last time the “war elephants” stepped onto the highest podium was 8 years ago, in Malaysia in 2017.
Madam Pang told the media that she had been closely following the team's preparations. According to her, the SEA Games is always a challenging playground as teams in the region have made remarkable progress. Some countries have even agreed to suspend their national championships to focus on winning the SEA Games gold medal.
However, the head of FAT still expressed confidence in the coaching staff led by coach Worrawoot Srimaka and all the players. She believes that Thailand is completely capable of returning to the number one position after 8 years of waiting. The important thing is that the whole team must focus and not be subjective to any opponent.
Madam Pang also thanked the clubs for creating conditions for players to join the national team even though the SEA Games is not part of the FIFA Days schedule. According to her, Thailand cannot take the SEA Games lightly, especially when the tournament is held on home soil.
“We have the responsibility to protect the honor of the host country and the national team’s colors. I hope the team will regain the SEA Games championship and hope that Thai fans will support the players,” she emphasized.
