Polio vaccination campaign launched in Gaza Strip

On September 1, the Health Authority in Gaza said that a polio vaccination campaign was being widely deployed in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli and Hamas forces had previously agreed to a pause in fighting to allow for vaccinations. Rik Peeperkorn, head of the World Health Organization (WHO) office in the West Bank and Gaza, said the first two rounds of vaccinations would be carried out in central Gaza for three days, followed by the southern and northern parts of the Strip. The pause in fighting for each round of vaccinations will last three days and can be extended to a fourth day if necessary.

In another development, US President Joe Biden said the parties involved in the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza have reached some agreement in principle towards a viable agreement.

The Israeli army announced the discovery of six bodies in a tunnel in the Gaza Strip, identified as hostages kidnapped by Hamas in an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. More than 100 hostages are still being held in the Gaza Strip.
