According to the statement, Farhad Shakeri confessed to US law enforcement that on October 7, 2024, he was tasked with planning the assassination of Donald Trump.
The plot was allegedly orchestrated by the IRGC to avenge the death of General Qassem Soleimani, commander of the IRGC's elite Quds Force, who was killed in a 2020 US attack in Iraq ordered by Trump during his first term as president.
The U.S. Department of Justice described Shakeri as a member of the IRGC residing in Tehran. The statement said that he immigrated to the U.S. as a child and was deported around 2008 on charges of robbery.
Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice has charged two other individuals in connection with a conspiracy to murder an Iranian-American citizen in New York.
Meanwhile, on November 9, the Iranian Foreign Ministry described the US accusation that Tehran plotted to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump as "completely unfounded."
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that the ministry “rejects allegations that Iran was involved in an assassination attempt against US officials or former officials.”
