On the morning of July 19, information from the Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training said that Tran Minh Hoang, a 12th grade student at Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted, won a Gold Medal at the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad held in Australia.
Accordingly, Tran Minh Hoang overcame many strong opponents from many countries and territories to win the prestigious Gold Medal, bringing glory to the school and Ha Tinh province.
Tran Minh Hoang was born and raised in a family with both parents being teachers in a coastal commune of Nghi Xuan district (old). From a young age, he showed outstanding talent in natural subjects, especially Math and Physics. His family shared that Hoang was sociable and cheerful but quite reserved when it came to studying. Outside of school hours, Hoang was passionate about playing chess and soccer, winning many district and provincial level awards when he was in primary and secondary school.

Minh Hoang's learning journey is a series of impressive achievements. Accordingly, in grade 8, he took the exam to advance to a higher level and became the top student in grade 9 in Mathematics and Information Technology. In grade 10, he won the Gold Medal in the Iran Geometry Olympiad (Intermediate category).
In grade 10, he continued to take the advanced exam and won the first prize in the national excellent student in Math for grade 12, and was also the valedictorian of the whole country. In addition, Minh Hoang has also won many international and regional awards such as: Gold Medal in English Math Olympiad (SEAMO) 2019. Silver Medal in Singapore Math Olympiad (SMO) 2019. Gold Medal in Singapore and Asian Math Olympiad (SASMO) 2012019. Special Prize in the Young Math Talent Search (MYTS) 2019. Silver Medal in International Math Olympiad 2024.
With excellent achievements at IMO 2024, I was awarded the Third Class Labor Medal by the President.
The 66th International Mathematical Olympiad was held from July 10 to 20, 2025 in Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, with the participation of more than 639 contestants from 113 delegations representing countries and territories. The total number of medals in this year's competition includes: 72 gold medals, 104 silver medals and 145 bronze medals.
The IMO 2025 exam consists of 6 problems: 2 arithmetic problems, 2 combinatorial problems, 1 geometry problem and 1 algebra problem (with combinatorial statements and combinatorial thinking requirements). This shows that this year's exam tends to focus on combinatorial content.
This year's Vietnamese team consists of 6 excellent students from specialized high schools across the country.
With a total score of 188, the Vietnamese delegation ranked 9th out of 113 countries and territories participating in this year's competition, behind the delegations of China (1), the US (2), South Korea (3), Poland and Japan tied for 4th place, Israel (6), India (7), Singapore (8).
Compared to the results in 2024 (2 Silver Medals, 3 Bronze Medals and 1 Certificate of Merit), the achievements of the Vietnamese delegation in 2025 have clearly surpassed. In particular, the Gold Medal of Tran Minh Hoang is an impressive highlight, contributing to affirming the position of Vietnamese Mathematics in the international arena.
