On the morning of July 19th, information from the Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training announced that Tran Minh Hoang, a 12th-grade student from Ha Tinh Specialized High School, had won a Gold Medal at the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad held in Australia.

Accordingly, Tran Minh Hoang overcame many strong competitors from various countries and territories to win the prestigious Gold Medal, bringing glory to the school and Ha Tinh province.

Tran Minh Hoang was born and raised in a family where both parents were teachers in a coastal commune of Nghi Xuan district (formerly). From a young age, he showed outstanding aptitude for natural sciences, especially mathematics and physics. His family shared that Hoang was sociable and cheerful, but rather reserved about his studies. Outside of school, Hoang was passionate about playing chess and football, winning many awards at the district and provincial levels during his primary and secondary school years.

Minh Hoang's academic journey is a series of impressive achievements. In 8th grade, he passed the entrance exam ahead of schedule and achieved top honors in Mathematics and Computer Science in the 9th grade provincial competition. In 10th grade, he won a Gold Medal in the Iranian Geometry Olympiad (Intermediate level).

In 10th grade, he continued to excel in his studies and won first prize in the national 12th-grade mathematics competition, simultaneously achieving the top score nationwide. Furthermore, Minh Hoang has won numerous international and regional awards, including: a Gold Medal at the 2019 English-language Mathematical Olympiad (SEAMO), a Silver Medal at the 2019 Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO), a Gold Medal at the 2019 Singapore and Asian Countries Mathematical Olympiad (SASMO), a Special Prize at the 2019 Young Mathematicians' Talent Search (MYTS), and a Silver Medal at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad.

For her outstanding performance at IMO 2024, she was awarded the Third-Class Labor Medal by the President of Vietnam.

The 66th International Mathematical Olympiad was held from July 10-20, 2025, in Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, with the participation of over 639 contestants from 113 delegations representing countries and territories. The total number of medals awarded this year included: 72 gold medals, 104 silver medals, and 145 bronze medals.

The 2025 IMO exam consists of 6 problems: 2 number theory problems, 2 combinatorial problems, 1 geometry problem, and 1 algebra problem (containing combinatorial statements and requiring combinatorial thinking). This reflects the trend this year's exam leaning towards combinatorial content.

This year's Vietnamese team consists of 6 outstanding students from specialized high schools across the country.

With a total score of 188, the Vietnamese delegation ranked 9th out of 113 countries and territories participating in this year's competition, behind the delegations: China (1), the US (2), South Korea (3), Poland and Japan tied for 4th, Israel (6), India (7), Singapore (8).

Compared to the results of 2024 (2 Silver Medals, 3 Bronze Medals and 1 Certificate of Merit), the achievements of the Vietnamese team in 2025 showed a clear improvement. In particular, the Gold Medal won by Tran Minh Hoang was an impressive highlight, further affirming the position of Vietnamese mathematics on the international stage.
