One of the most controversial views is about Tran Thi Thanh Thuy - the main attacker, team captain, and also the number 1 star of Vietnamese women's volleyball for nearly 10 years.

Thanh Thuy’s performance at the 2025 World Cup was not particularly impressive. However, she was still one of the top scorers for her team, with 6 points against Poland, 17 points against Germany and 6 points against Kenya.

In the 3 matches, Thanh Thuy played best in the match against the extremely strong opponent Germany, but performed poorly against the Kenyan girls who were considered the weakest in the group.

Because of that, there were hundreds of comments criticizing Thanh Thuy after the match, coming from Vietnamese fans themselves. Specifically, in a volleyball group with more than 30,000 members in Vietnam, there were many opinions that Thanh Thuy often made mistakes in the first pass, had poor ball smashing, and was also worthless in defense.

Some other opinions said that the fault lies with coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet for putting too much faith in Thanh Thuy, letting her play throughout all 3 matches in the group stage.

Some more moderate fans think that Thanh Thuy should be sympathized with because she is 28 years old, showing signs of passing her prime, and should be gradually rotated in the coming time.

The controversy surrounding Thanh Thuy even spread to Thai volleyball forums. Thai and Vietnamese fans often comment "back and forth" on each other's forums.

Many Thai fans were surprised when Thanh Thuy was criticized by neighboring fans. This topic received a lot of discussion on Thailand's Pantip sports forum.

"She has carried the team for a long time, year after year. I also feel sorry for her fatigue," a Thai fan commented.

Another fan commented: "If anyone has to take responsibility after the defeat, the first one should be the coach and the managers, not the best player of the team."

Another fan commented: "I admire 4T (the familiar name of Thanh Thuy among Vietnamese and Thai fans). She is always the best athlete in the Vietnamese team, a rare person who has reached the top level of the continent."

Not only fans, even experts also gave many compliments to the girl from Binh Duong .

When asked about the most impressive faces in the Vietnamese team, Italian coach Stefano Lavarini of the Polish team said: "Those are the two girls wearing jerseys number 3 (Thanh Thuy) and number 16 (Vi Thi Nhu Quynh). Both of them scored a lot of points, moved wisely and created pressure on our team."

Ahead of the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship, Thanh Thuy was unexpectedly ranked by the prestigious website Volleybox in the top 100 best athletes of 2025.

She is even ranked 14th in the world, and 4th if only considering the main attacker position. Volleybox ranks athletes based on team and individual achievements, with a clear scoring formula.

Thanh Thuy's high ranking is mainly due to Vietnam's many titles in regional and continental tournaments.
