Herring are surface-dwelling fish that usually travel in schools; when they see the school of fish moving, the fishermen begin to cast their nets. Photo: Xuan Hoang
The herring fishing season begins in late February and lasts until the end of May. According to Bui Van Luong, a fisherman in Dien Kim commune, the herring swim in schools, 2-5 nautical miles from the shore. "We usually go out at 2 am and start returning to shore around 7 am to collect the fish. Almost every trip yields 150-200 kg, selling for 13,000 VND/kg, bringing in millions of dong. From the beginning of the season until now, Mr. Luong's family has earned nearly 50 million dong." The herring are picked, washed, and purchased on the spot by traders. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuong, a trader, said that the herring are caught at night and not preserved with ice, so they are very fresh. The fresh herring are not only sold in nearby markets but are also packed and transported to Hanoi and other northern cities for consumption. During the herring fishing season, Dien Chau fishermen catch tons of fish every day. Herring from Nghe An is considered by customers to be fatter and tastier than that from other regions.
