Many elderly people were very happy to receive a free health check-up.

“For the past three years, although my body has been very tired and aching, I have not dared to go to the hospital because I am worried about the cost. Now I finally have the opportunity to have a doctor examine my health” - Ms. Salmah Him (76 years old, Phong Phu commune, Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh City) shows off her “ticket” to be invited to a free health check-up when the economy is still facing many difficulties.

I was so happy I couldn't sleep.

On October 1st, at Phong Phu Secondary School (Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam Waste Treatment Company – VWS (Da Phuoc Waste Treatment Company) collaborated with the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Binh Chanh District to organize free medical examinations and health consultations for the elderly, laborers, ethnic minorities, and people from poor and near-poor households in Phong Phu, Da Phuoc, and Quy Duc communes.

Many elderly people and those from disadvantaged backgrounds received free medical examinations and medication.

Before 6 a.m., Mrs. Salmah Him (76 years old, residing in Hamlet 3, Phong Phu Commune) arrived very early at the health check-up point to wait for medical care. Mrs. Salmah Him said that she often felt tired and had neck and shoulder pain, but didn't dare go to the hospital because she didn't have money. "For the pain, I can only apply ointment temporarily, because my family doesn't have the money for examination and treatment," Mrs. Salmah Him said tearfully.

Two days ago, after receiving an invitation from local officials to attend a free medical check-up, Mrs. Salmah Him couldn't sleep all night, just hoping for dawn so she could see the doctor. There, she received attentive care from the doctors, who prescribed medication and advised her on how to care for her health at home.

"This is the first time I've received a free health check-up, so I'm very happy. Besides my high blood pressure, there are no other serious health issues, so I feel much less worried," said Salmah Him.

Also among the first people to receive medical examination, Mrs. Le Thi Duc (76 years old) shared that she used to have a house in Phong Phu commune; due to difficult circumstances, she had to sell it, and the whole family moved all the way to Long An to make a living.

“I’m old now, so I can only rely on my children and grandchildren. But they are also poor, barely making ends meet; even when they are sick, they don’t dare go for proper medical checkups. Today, I finally received such thorough medical examinations and consultations from the doctors. In addition to the prescribed medication, the doctors also gave us supplements to boost our health. Even more surprisingly, we received gifts of essential food items. We are all elderly people in difficult circumstances, but we are so touched by the care and attention we receive from generous benefactors,” Mrs. Duc said, her voice choked with emotion.

I hope the program lasts longer.

According to the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Binh Chanh District, from 2017 to the present, in coordination with the Trade Union of the Office of the National Assembly Deputies and the City People's Council, the leadership of Vietnam Waste Treatment Company - VWS and the volunteer medical team in the city have organized medical examinations, health consultations and gift giving for 1,500 elderly people, ethnic minorities, poor households, near-poor households and households with difficult circumstances in the district.

Continuing to uphold the tradition of "mutual support and compassion," on the occasion of the 31st International Day of Older Persons, with the sponsorship of VWS, the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Binh Chanh District continued to organize a program of medical examinations, health consultations, and gift giving for 250 elderly people, ethnic minorities, poor households, near-poor households, and households with difficult circumstances in Phong Phu, Da Phuoc, and Quy Duc communes.

“We hope this program will continue year after year, contributing to the efforts of the Party Committee, government, and Fatherland Front and mass organizations from the district to the commune and town levels in caring for the health of people in difficult circumstances who have limited access to medical examinations,” said Ms. Truong Thoai Linh, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Binh Chanh District.

Having accompanied the program of free medical check-ups, free medicine distribution, and gift giving to disadvantaged people in Binh Chanh district for many years, Mr. Duong Van Cuong, Administrative Director of VWS Company, shared: “The company is very honored to be a partner with the Ho Chi Minh City Red Cross, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Binh Chanh district, and other agencies in caring for the health of people in Binh Chanh district. Over the years, VWS Company has organized free health check-ups and medical treatment for people in three communes of Phong Phu, Da Phuoc, and Quy Duc in Binh Chanh district. On this occasion, the company is sponsoring 200 gifts for the elderly, ethnic minorities, poor households, near-poor households, and households with difficult circumstances. The company hopes that people will always have abundant health, receive regular health care, and have a happy and joyful life.”
