After using AI to help review students' transcripts, the female teacher received many mixed comments.

Using AI to support the education industry

Every time the end of the semester comes, homeroom teachers of primary and secondary schools in Hangzhou (China) in addition to teaching, preparing questions, and grading exams, also have to face many "nameless tasks". Among them, writing comments in the report card for each student seems simple but also takes up a lot of teachers' time.

Every year, teachers have a headache trying to find a way to write a personal comment for each student that reflects their abilities and qualities. A teacher named Truong shared in an interview: "My class alone has 42 students, each student has at least 200 words, which is more than 8,000 words. Moreover, we cannot use the same template, each student needs a different evaluation and encouragement. Because I really want to encourage them, I often spend a lot of time thinking about how to write a good, meaningful and creative comment. This task seems simple but it is really a headache."

To ease the workload of teachers, many schools in Hangzhou have experimented with using AI to write comments for students. This new method has caused heated debates and mixed reactions from parents. Can AI really replace teachers’ personal comments?

Many parents are hesitant about using AI to write comments, and some even strongly oppose it. A parent with a child in grade 3 shared: "I find comments written by AI too mechanical, lacking the personality and unique characteristics of each student. Compared to that, I prefer handwritten comments from teachers, which shows the teacher's care and affection for each student."

Besides those who object, many parents also believe that writing report card comments is already stressful, so if AI can help improve performance, it is not a bad thing. At the same time, there are also opinions that applying technology to analyze their children's learning situation will help comments become more directional and practical. "The combination of AI and teacher input will help students' comments become more complete."

What teachers say after using AI

As for teachers, after using AI experiments, they also gave very diverse feedback. One elementary school literature teacher tried using AI to write comments, but she found the results were often rigid and lacking in intimacy. She said that although AI can help increase work efficiency, parents still want their children's comments to have more specific details and positive encouragement. In contrast, another teacher had a more open attitude, thinking that AI could be used to create a framework, then based on each student's specific situation to edit, thus ensuring both intimacy and maintaining individuality.

In the era of AI gradually penetrating the field of education, combining artificial intelligence with personalized teaching methods has also become a topic of interest to many people. Some teachers at Pujia Primary School, Hangzhou (China) are studying the following method: Through the school's digital platform, from the huge amount of student learning data, AI will create initial comments. Then, teachers will observe and edit, and finally complete the personalized comments. This combination will certainly enrich the content of comments, while reducing the workload for teachers. The progress of new technology is undeniable. The trend of using AI to write student comments is gradually becoming popular. However, both parents and teachers do not ignore the balance between technology and human factors. One homeroom teacher shared her experience: "I accept AI support, but adding my observations and understanding of the children to the comments is indispensable. After all, this is our summary of a stage of their growth."

Looking to the future, how to utilize high-tech tools to effectively support teachers' work, while still maintaining the humanity in comments, requires reflection and joint efforts of educators, parents, and even the entire educational ecosystem. For those who want to find a balance between efficiency and closeness, AI is certainly a useful tool, but it certainly cannot replace the warmth created by the dedication of teachers. So when applying AI, remember to use it intelligently and flexibly to suit the actual situation.
