According to Ms. Dinh Thi Huong, a literature teacher at Tuyensinh247, the sample exam for 10th grade high school entrance in Hanoi closely follows the curriculum; adheres to the 2018 output standards, avoiding rote learning and cramming; focuses on students' understanding of familiar yet highly topical issues; and the questions revolve around reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
The sample exam questions are differentiated at various levels, appropriate to students' abilities, and provide a comprehensive assessment of their competence.
The test matrix is differentiated according to the levels of knowledge (20%), comprehension (40%), and application (40%).

"The sample exam for Literature in Hanoi has been updated with a question requiring students to write an argumentative essay. This change in question format will be a challenge for junior high school students when completing the exam within 120 minutes, but it will also help differentiate students," Ms. Huong said.
With these new points, according to Ms. Huong, candidates need to firmly grasp the characteristics of each genre, practice reading comprehension skills, and hone their skills in writing paragraphs and essays.
With a word limit of 400 for a social commentary essay, students need to know how to select and present their ideas in the most logical and comprehensive way possible.
Commenting on the recently released sample literature exam from Hanoi, Mr. Nguyen Phi Hung, a literature teacher at the hocmai education system, said that the sample exam closely adheres to the learning objectives of the 2018 General Education Program for 9th grade literature.
The exam focuses on testing and evaluating students' abilities, specifically reading and writing skills.
The reading section draws its material from texts outside of textbooks, allowing for the assessment of students' reading abilities according to different text types, avoiding rote learning and memorization.
The sample test consists of essay-style questions, divided into two main parts: The reading section (4 points) includes questions revolving around a text belonging to one of three types: literary text, informational text, or argumentative text, which students have been familiar with since grade 6.

Notably, the group of literary texts does not include the drama genre (studied in grade 9) but does include the memoir genre (studied in lower grades).
While the exam structure/matrix doesn't explicitly mention requirements related to the Vietnamese language section, these knowledge and skills have been integrated into the reading and writing questions.
The writing section (6 points) requires writing a literary argumentative essay (200 words) and a social commentary essay (400 words). Therefore, there are no narrative, explanatory, or expressive essay types (which are taught in grade 9).
For social commentary essays, the content can be linked to the reading comprehension text from the previous section. Literary commentary essays require analyzing an excerpt from the reading section, but the prompt must not overlap with the questions already addressed in the previous section.
Although the sample test requires writing a paragraph in the literary analysis section and an essay in the social commentary section, according to Mr. Hung, this requirement can be flexibly changed when implementing the writing requirements.
Furthermore, the reading comprehension material and the material used in the literary essay writing exercise do not necessarily have to be the same.
