(CLO) In just the past week, while the world was busy celebrating Christmas and New Year, a series of serious aviation accidents or incidents occurred.
South Koreans and people around the world are still reeling from the horrific plane crash at Muan International Airport last Sunday, when a Jeju Airlines plane made a belly landing, crashed into a fence, and exploded, killing 179 of the 181 people on board.

Just a few days earlier, specifically on Wednesday, another serious aviation accident occurred involving an Azerbaijani airliner. The passenger plane, en route to the Russian city of Grozny, suddenly diverted and subsequently crashed in Kazakhstan.
Thirty-eight people died in the accident, although the bravery and experience of the captain and co-pilot helped 29 people sitting in the back of the plane survive.

News of aircraft incidents and accidents continued to pour into the world yesterday. Shortly after the tragic accident in South Korea, late Sunday, another Jeju Air passenger plane, which departed from Gimpo Airport in Seoul bound for Jeju on Monday, experienced a landing gear malfunction shortly after takeoff.
According to local media, the plane had to return to Gimpo and fortunately landed safely, avoiding the tragic end of the plane in Muan.

Also on Sunday evening, another piece of bad news related to aviation was reported. This time, the incident involved a Canadian aircraft. Specifically, an Air Canada plane caught fire during an emergency landing in Nova Scotia on Saturday night.
Videos shared on social media show passengers on a plane sliding off the runway at Halifax Stanfield International Airport while one of the aircraft's wings catches fire.

Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick said there was "suspected problem with the landing gear" as the flight carrying 73 passengers arrived in Halifax on Saturday night. "As a result, the aircraft was unable to reach the terminal and passengers were transported by bus."
However, Fitzpatrick stated that "no casualties were reported." A spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Police later confirmed that the crew had "been safely evacuated from the aircraft" and no injuries were reported.
