Thanks to widespread internet access and high mobile phone penetration, rural Chinese – about a third of the country’s 1.4 billion population – are actively applying artificial intelligence (AI) to agricultural production and daily life.

The boom was sparked by DeepSeek, a Hangzhou-based start-up that released open-source AI models, sparking a wave of AI adoption across the country.
Big Chinese tech companies like Alibaba and Tencent are also taking part. They have developed easy-to-use chatbots, making AI more accessible to ordinary users, especially farmers.
Alibaba has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Zhejiang provincial government, aiming to narrow the wealth gap between urban and rural areas through the application of AI technology.
Major corporations such as Baidu, Huawei and JD.com are also investing heavily in AI solutions for smart agriculture, helping to optimize crop yields, detect diseases in crops and livestock, and automate production processes.
The Chinese government has introduced strong support policies to accelerate digital transformation in rural areas, with the aim of making AI a pillar in agricultural modernization.
