On December 4, US President-elect Donald Trump appointed billionaire Jared Isaacman, the first private astronaut to walk in space and a close friend of billionaire Elon Musk, to lead NASA.
"Jared will advance NASA's mission of exploration and inspiration, paving the way for groundbreaking achievements in science , technology, and space exploration," President-elect Trump said in a post on the Truth Social platform.
Mr. Trump emphasized: "Jared's passion for space, his experience as an astronaut, and his dedication to pushing the boundaries of exploration, unraveling the mysteries of the universe, and fostering a new space economy make him the ideal person to lead NASA into a bold new era."

Commenting on Trump's announcement, Isaacman shared on the X platform: "I am honored to receive the nomination from President-elect Trump to be the next leader of NASA."
Isaacman emphasized, "Space has unparalleled potential for breakthroughs in manufacturing, biotechnology, mining, and possibly even a path to new energy sources." Isaacman also expressed hope that the United States would lead the way in leaving the most profound mark on human history.
Isaacman (41 years old) is the CEO of Shift4 Payments, a US-based payment processing company. He is also the co-founder and leader of Draken International, a private fighter jet manufacturer and contractor for the US Department of Defense . Isaacman is known to be a close associate of billionaire Elon Musk and a frequent customer of SpaceX.
According to Reuters, if approved by the U.S. Senate, billionaire Isaacman, who has no government or political experience, would oversee NASA's approximately $25 billion budget. The agency's top priority is currently returning humans to the moon under the Artemis program – an effort promoted by Trump during his first term. Isaacman anticipates relying on private companies to access space as a commercial service.
Trump's selection of NASA's leader took place months earlier than previous presidential transitions.
