Cultivating character from school.
At the age of 3, Nguyen Thi Minh Thu (Binh Tay village, Po To commune, Gia Lai province) was diagnosed with liver disease. Her difficult family circumstances, including her parents' divorce, made her shy and hesitant to participate in group activities. However, with the encouragement of her teachers, since becoming a member of the "Leaders of Change" Club at Phan Dinh Phung Secondary School, Thu has become more confident and actively participates in activities.
By joining the Club, I have been equipped with and have enhanced my knowledge and skills regarding gender equality, empowerment, and children's issues… As a result, I am not afraid to express my views on these issues.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Dung, a teacher and head of the Youth Union at Phan Dinh Phung Secondary School, said that the school's "Leaders of Change" club was established in 2023 with 30 members. Through weekend activities, the students receive training and guidance on basic knowledge about preventing child marriage, consanguineous marriage, and school violence.
In addition, the students also participated in many beneficial activities organized by the local Women's Union, such as: a painting competition to raise awareness about preventing and combating school violence, a competition to find creative and effective solutions in communicating to eliminate gender stereotypes, domestic violence, and build a civilized lifestyle…
Through this, the students build their character and self-confidence; at the same time, they develop their abilities, boldly express their thoughts on gender equality, and become exemplary "leaders" in local awareness campaigns.
Aspiration to rise
Ms. Kpă H'Chuên (a Gia Rai ethnic minority) is a member of the "Community Communication Team" in Mơ Nang 2 village (Ia Pa commune, Gia Lai province). Ms. Kpă said that since participating in the activities of the Project "Implementing Gender Equality and Addressing Urgent Issues for Women and Children" (Project 8), and receiving training and raising awareness about gender, she has a better understanding of gender equality in her family.
"A truly happy and equal marriage is only possible when there is sharing, understanding, the right to contribute opinions, and joint decision-making on both big and small matters in the family. I am very happy to wake up early with my husband every day to prepare breakfast for the children."
"I am very happy that my husband shares the housework so that I can participate in social activities," Kpă H'Chuên confided.

Mr. Kpă Trân, Party Secretary and Head of Mơ Nang 2 village, said: The Gia Rai people follow a matriarchal system. Due to a lack of understanding, many villages still retain outdated customs. Thanks to the regular propaganda and mobilization efforts of the "Community Communication Team" members, the villagers have gradually changed their way of thinking and doing things.
The men in the village share household chores and rarely gather to drink alcohol, while the women are increasingly actively participating in community activities at the village and commune levels.
The models "Trusted Addresses in the Community," "Leaders of Change," "Community Communication Teams," etc., from Project 8 of the National Target Program for socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas have made a significant contribution to eliminating gender stereotypes and biases; ensuring the voice and participation of women and children in socio-economic development activities...
