Information about the candidate submitting his application to become the head coach of the Vietnam national team was discussed a lot this morning (March 30). Mr. Kim Sang-sik - a Korean - was the name mentioned. However, this information has not been verified.
Mr. Kim Sang-sik, born in 1976, is a former South Korean national team player. When he was still playing, he was a center back, defensive midfielder and spent most of his career playing for two of the top clubs in the country, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
Coach Kim Sang-sik
Kim Sang-sik's record as a player includes all the collective titles of Korean football. He won the K League 1 championship with both Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
Kim Sang-sik played for the South Korean national team in the 2006 World Cup. However, the former defender was never a key player in the national team. In his only World Cup appearance, Kim Sang-sik only played for about 20 minutes when he was put on the bench.
After retiring in 2013, Kim Sang-sik moved into coaching as an assistant at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. After 8 years, the Korean team appointed the former player as head coach. This was the first and only time he took on this role in his coaching career.
According to Transfermarkt data, coach Kim Sang-sik led Jeonbuk Hyundai in 108 matches, winning an average of 1.94 points per match.
He started his coaching career impressively with the K League 1 championship in 2021 and the Korean FA Cup in 2022 (second place in K League 1 in the same year). However, in the 2023 season, Jeonbuk declined significantly.
After the first 10 rounds, coach Kim Sang-sik's team lost 6 matches and was far behind the leader. The coach, born in 1976, wrote a handwritten letter to the club and fans to apologize and resign. He has not led any team up to this point.
