A group of lawmakers from Prime Minister Trudeau's ruling Liberal Party are discussing plans to pressure the leader to resign.
CBS News reported on October 12 that members of parliament met in Ottawa this week and were asked to sign a document calling for a change in leadership. "At least" 20 lawmakers signed the document, according to CBC.
The plan comes as Canada's Parliament returns to work after the Liberals suffered losses in local elections in Montreal and Toronto, and while Prime Minister Trudeau is on a foreign trip from October 8-11.
A report in the Toronto Star newspaper on October 11 also described a public effort by some Liberal Party members to force Mr. Trudeau to resign.
“At least 30 to 40 MPs” are willing to sign the document, but not enough to have a majority to implement it. The Liberal Party currently holds 153 seats in Canada’s lower house of parliament.
The Canadian Prime Minister's Office has not commented on the above information.
Trade Minister Mary Ng, returning home after accompanying Prime Minister Trudeau on a trip to Laos, said she was disappointed to hear about the plan and affirmed her full confidence in the leader. Mr. Trudeau has been prime minister since 2015.
