A group of lawmakers from Prime Minister Trudeau's ruling Liberal Party are discussing plans to pressure the leader to resign.
Members of Parliament met in Ottawa this week and were asked to sign a document calling for a change in leadership, CBS News reported on October 12. "At least" 20 MPs signed the document, according to CBC.
The plan was implemented as Canada's Parliament returned to work after the Liberal Party suffered losses in local elections in Montreal and Toronto, and while Prime Minister Trudeau was on a foreign trip from October 8-11.
A report in the Toronto Star newspaper on October 11 also described a public effort by some Liberal Party members to force Mr. Trudeau to resign.
“At least 30 to 40 MPs” are willing to sign the document, but not enough to have a majority to implement it. The Liberal Party currently holds 153 seats in Canada’s lower house.
The Canadian Prime Minister's Office has not commented on the above information.
Trade Minister Mary Ng, returning from a trip with Trudeau to Laos, said she was disappointed to hear about the plan and had full confidence in the leader. Trudeau has been prime minister since 2015.
