Salah and the journey to make history
At the 2025 PFA Awards ceremony held on the evening of August 19 (UK time), Mohamed Salah was named Player of the Year, surpassing a series of formidable opponents such as Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd), Alexander Isak (Newcastle), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Declan Rice (Arsenal) and teammate Alexis Mac Allister.
At the age of 33, Salah has done something no one has done before: winning the PFA award three times - an achievement that surpasses legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Gareth Bale, Kevin De Bruyne and Mark Hughes.
The Egyptian forward first won the award in 2017/18, again in 2021/22 and now sets a historic record with his third win.
Notably, Salah won this title in the season Liverpool won the Premier League 2024/25.
In Liverpool's previous coronation in the 2019/20 season, the PFA title belonged to Kevin De Bruyne (Man City).
This is the first time Salah has successfully combined the championship trophy and individual awards – a turning point in his career.
Explosive season and Golden Ball ambition
In the 2024/25 season, Salah showed brilliant form, leading the Premier League with 29 goals and 18 assists.
He became the soul in Liverpool's journey to the championship, helping coach Arne Slot's team defeat Arsenal in a thrilling two-horse race.
Not only that, Salah also won the Premier League Player of the Season and Football Writers' Association (FWA) Player of the Year awards. With three individual awards, Salah became the leading candidate for the 2025 Ballon d'Or.
Salah's chances are not certain, though. Liverpool's early exit from the Champions League and failure in the Carabao Cup could put him under pressure to compete with rivals from Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and PSG.
But according to experts, if we look at England alone, what Salah did last season deserves to make him the "dominant symbol" of the tournament.
“I always dreamed of becoming a professional footballer and making my family proud. As you grow older, you see bigger goals and have bigger ambitions. This is a proud moment in my career,” Salah said after the awards ceremony.
Liverpool, Salah and the new power race
Salah's win marks a significant milestone for Liverpool, who have been at the back of the pack for some time now, having been dominated by Manchester City. Over the past 10 years, Liverpool and Man City have dominated the PFA awards, but Liverpool are slowly making a difference.
• Liverpool: 5 PFA titles from 2012/13 season to present.
• Manchester City: 4 titles in the same period.
• Total since 1974: Liverpool have had 10 players win the award – the most in history.
Notably, Salah also broke Man City's monopoly, when this team had a series of 5 consecutive seasons with players winning the PFA award (Phil Foden and Erling Haaland).
This is seen as an affirmation that Liverpool are ready to enter a new cycle of title competition with Manchester City, Arsenal and even Aston Villa - a team that is emerging strongly with Morgan Rogers, the best young player of the year.
Salah's personal mark and legacy
Salah is not just about scoring goals, creating assists and winning trophies, he is also a symbol of perseverance and a desire to improve. His journey from a small village in Egypt to becoming a living legend at Liverpool is a testament to extraordinary willpower.
Over 7 seasons at Anfield, Salah has:
• Scored 221 goals in all competitions.
• Ranked 5th in the list of greatest strikers in Liverpool history.
• Helped the club win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, European Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
More than just a sporting icon, Salah is also a role model for a generation of Middle Eastern footballers, inspiring perseverance, professionalism and the ability to conquer Europe's greatest heights.
With the 2025 PFA award, Mohamed Salah has not only set a personal record but also marked a new chapter in the history of Liverpool and the Premier League. While the 2025 Ballon d'Or race is still open, Salah has affirmed his position as one of the best players of the decade.
The new season is just beginning, but Salah's journey to legendary status is certainly not over. With his current form, he can absolutely add more brilliant milestones, contributing to reshaping the map of European football power.
