SEA Games 33 Day Two (December 11): Vietnam Wins 10 Gold Medals, Rises to Second Place in the Ranking

VHO - The second day of competition at the 33rd SEA Games concluded with positive signs for the Vietnamese sports delegation. Thanks to the 10 newly won gold medals, Vietnam has risen to second place in the overall standings, thereby creating favorable momentum for the medal race in the following days of competition.

Vietnamese athletes win gold medals on the second day of competition (December 11) at the 33rd SEA Games:

Nguyen Thi Phuong, Nguyen Ngoc Tram, Bui Ngoc Nhi, Hoang Thi Thu Uyen (women's kata, Karate); Nguyen Hong Trong (men's 54kg, Taekwondo), Nguyen Ngoc Xuan Thien (pommel horse, gymnastics), Nguyen Van Khanh Phong (rings, gymnastics), Tran Quoc Cuong/Phan Minh Hanh (Nage no Kata, Judo); Dang Dinh Tung (Jiujitsu); Ho Trong Manh Hung (triple jump, athletics); Bui Thi Ngan (women's 1500m, athletics), Pham Thanh Bao (100m breaststroke, swimming), Vietnam swimming team (4x200m freestyle relay)

On December 11th, host nation Thailand continued to assert its dominance by winning an additional 22 gold medals, convincingly maintaining its top position. As of 11 PM, Thailand had a total of 79 medals, including 41 gold, 24 silver, and 14 bronze, demonstrating a strong surge from the early stages of the Games.

In the chasing group, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation had an effective day of competition, especially in strong disciplines such as athletics, swimming, karate, taekwondo, jujitsu, and gymnastics. With 10 new gold medals, Vietnam's total medal count increased to 49 (14 gold, 8 silver, and 7 bronze).

Athletics and swimming continued to prove their role as "gold mines". Ho Trong Manh Hung won the gold medal in the men's triple jump; Bui Thi Ngan won convincingly in the women's 1,500m final.

In the swimming events, Pham Thanh Bao successfully defended his number one position in Southeast Asia in the men's 100m breaststroke, while the men's 4x200m freestyle relay team, consisting of Nguyen Viet Tuong, Nguyen Huy Hoang, Tran Van Nguyen Quoc, and Tran Hung Nguyen, performed impressively to win another important gold medal.

Vietnamese swimmers had a successful day of competition.

Karate added another gold medal thanks to the emotional team performance of Nguyen Thi Phuong, Nguyen Ngoc Tram, Bui Ngoc Nhi, and Hoang Thi Thu Uyen in the kata event. Taekwondo added to their joy with Nguyen Hong Trong's victory in the men's 54kg category.

Jujitsu made its mark with a gold medal won by Dang Dinh Tung (men's 69kg Ne-waza), while gymnastics continued to demonstrate its strength with Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien (pommel horse) and Nguyen Van Khanh Phong (rings) successively stepping onto the top podium.

In MMA, fighter Nguyen Ngoc Luong defeated his Indonesian opponent to win the gold medal in the men's 60kg modern category; however, this event is not included in the official medal count of the SEA Games.

Besides individual events, good news continues from the football field. Both the U22 men's team and the women's team won 2-0 in their final group stage matches to secure their places in the semi-finals. U22 Vietnam overcame Malaysia with a dominant performance, while the women's team defeated Myanmar to qualify for the semi-finals against Indonesia.

After two days of competition, Vietnam finished second, just behind Thailand and one gold medal ahead of Indonesia. Following them were Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Laos. Brunei and Timor-Leste were still awaiting their first gold medals.

On December 12th, the 33rd SEA Games will continue to be exciting with 58 sets of medals being awarded. The Vietnamese sports delegation has the opportunity to increase its achievements, especially in its strong events which will enter the finals on the following day of competition.
