High school graduation exam 2025 tomorrow morning: Nervous about the essay topic

Although there are no more rumors about the 'secret' exam questions like last year, candidates are still very nervous about the exam questions, especially the literature questions, in the context that this is the first year the exam is organized according to the 2018 general education program.

Instead of guessing "which textbook work will be on the exam," parents and students this year are now focusing on predicting "the exam topic" and spending the last 24 hours before the exam "gathering materials."

"My child has stopped studying for the exam but is still glued to the computer, chatting in the class group chat and discussing predicted exam topics with teachers. The other day, my child told me to pay attention to information and data about the 50th anniversary of national reunification. Today, I saw the kids talking to each other about researching AI, GPT chat, and digital transformation," shared Ms. Huong, a parent in Cau Giay district (Hanoi) whose child is taking the exam this year.

Thu Huong, a student from Tran Phu High School (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi ), also said: "We try to guess the topic to find related materials. If the question hits the topic, it saves time searching. But guessing the topic is too broad, so it's also difficult."

It's mainly to feel more confident when entering the exam room. Not being able to use the materials in the textbook makes us feel a bit lost.

Meanwhile, experienced teachers advise students to "abandon the idea of ​​trying to guess the answers to this year's essay topic because getting caught up in it could lead to being overwhelmed by the answer."

Ms. Trinh Thu Tuyet, former literature teacher at Chu Van An High School (Hanoi), believes that the biggest change in this year's literature exam (based on the sample exam) is the selection of materials outside the textbook in both the reading comprehension, social commentary, and literary analysis sections.

This innovation will eliminate rote learning and memorizing model essays, encouraging students to read more and access diverse materials. The absence of rote memorization forces students to thoroughly understand genres, the steps involved in presenting essays on reading comprehension, social commentary, and literary analysis, thereby developing their reading, writing, and independent thought skills.

However, the transition from changes to exam format to changes in teaching and learning methods requires a much longer process. For this year's exam, teachers still advise students to first and foremost thoroughly understand the types of questions and the steps involved in answering them according to the sample exam structure.

"You can 'hoard' some materials to use for comparison and proving the requirements of the exam questions. But you shouldn't get carried away by following rumors and then searching for topics to memorize."

"Materials on topics such as youth, family feelings, homeland, country, issues that are relevant or of interest to young people... are materials that students can read and memorize because they are easy to apply," advises Ms. Kim Anh, Phan Huy Chu High School (Dong Da district, Hanoi).

According to Ms. Kim Anh, even before the Ministry of Education and Training decided to use textbook material in the essay exam, she had always reminded students of the "formulas" they needed to grasp, which were essentially the basic steps to answer questions similar to the sample exam.

Ms. Hoang Anh, a teacher at Chu Van An High School (Tay Ho District, Hanoi), also reminded her students: "The exam questions do not use material from the textbook, but depending on the specific requirements of the exam, candidates can still use both textbook and non-textbook materials as examples and evidence for the arguments presented in the essay." Ms. Hoang Anh also advised candidates to find reliable sources when researching and using materials from social media.
