Students "miserable" because dormitory does not allow drying clothes on balcony

Receiving the notice on the afternoon of September 21, PK, a second-year student in dormitory area B, Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that the dormitory had just issued a new regulation, requiring students to dry their laundry in the bathroom until it is dry, then they can take it out to dry on 2 poles next to the balcony and absolutely cannot dry it in the balcony area.

PK shared that K.'s room has 4 people, and not being able to dry clothes on the balcony right after washing will easily cause the clothes to get moldy, because the weather often rains continuously. PK only received the notice recently, but his friends in the same building had been sent a commitment letter about this since last week.

"Our whole department disagrees because this causes inconvenience in daily life and directly affects the interests of students," PK said.

After more than 3 years in dormitory area B, Ho Chi Minh City National University, DD, a 3rd year student, shared that his room has not received any specific notice but has long been reminded by the head of the building that rooms facing the crescent lake (the main area of the dormitory) are not allowed to dry clothes on the balcony.

D.D said that drying clothes in the bathroom is very difficult, especially in rooms with 6 to 8 people.

"It's the rainy season now, the air in the room is quite humid, drying clothes in the bathroom will create conditions for bacteria to grow, increasing the risk of diseases such as colds and tonsillitis," said DD.

Sharing the same sentiment, DL, a second-year student, shared that if clothes can only be dried in the dorm room, it is impossible for them to dry.

"Damp clothes will cause many skin problems, students have no choice but to go to the laundry and dry cleaning service, which will be very expensive. I hope the dormitory management board will think more carefully about the students, consider their opinions and make changes," DL expressed.

On the student group in dormitory area B, many students were upset because they felt that not allowing clothes to be hung on the balcony was unreasonable, causing inconvenience in daily life and incurring additional laundry and drying costs.

Responding to this issue, Mr. Lai The Tuan, Head of the Dormitory Department of Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that the E2 - E3 building has 16 floors, of which 14 floors are occupied by students. Of the total 672 rooms, 224 rooms are located at the front of the building.

The first floor area of the two buildings is the office area of the departments, divisions, units, meeting rooms, and reception rooms of the Center. In front of the building is the square area of the sovereignty milestone of Truong Sa archipelago, which is also a place for sightseeing and activities of boarding students.

"Since the time of putting into operation and arranging students to stay in the two buildings E2 and E3, the issue of drying clothes has always received attention. The situation of students drying clothes spontaneously, without order or discipline, clothes hanging out of the balcony railings is unsightly, leaving a bad impression of the dormitory," he shared.

According to him, in order to ensure the aesthetics of the front of the office area, contributing to building a civilized and polite image of the dormitory in the hearts of students, parents and visitors to the dormitory, the Management Board of Clusters B and E conducted a survey to get students' opinions on solutions to ensure the aesthetics of the front of the two buildings E2, E3 and equipped 3 more clothes drying racks/room for students to dry their clothes in the room.

"If students do not agree with the plan, they can submit a request to the Management Board to move their rooms to the back of the building. However, for the convenience of students, the Management Board of clusters B and E will organize meetings with students of the above rooms to inform them and hope that students will suggest other suitable plans for additional implementation," he informed.
