Hawaii Governor Josh Green said in an interview with CNN that the death toll from last month's wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui has fallen from 115 to 97. He also said the number of missing people is now 31, down from 66 last week.

"The death toll has decreased because we have Department of Defence anthropologists who can conduct advanced genetic research. They can ensure that we are not falsely reporting deaths and are not dashing the hopes of those families," Green said.
The fire broke out on August 8th. The wildfire spread down the slopes of a volcano, toward the tourist resort town of Lahaina, destroying or damaging approximately 2,200 buildings and causing billions of dollars in damage. Many residents were forced to jump into the sea to escape the raging flames.
