The people were happy to cooperate in the inventory of their belongings so that they could be relocated to safe new homes as soon as possible.

Waiting for the day we arrive safely.

One day in mid-October 2025, joy was evident on the faces of the residents living in houses at the foot of Phu Gia mountain as they witnessed authorities measuring and inventorying their property to carry out land clearance and resettlement. Mr. Ngo Si (born in 1968) shared: “We are so happy. For more than 15 years, every rainy season has been filled with the constant worry of landslides. Now that we are about to be relocated to a new, safe place, the whole family is very excited.”

In the memory of Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyt (born in 1952), also a neighbor of Mr. Si, each rainy season was a time of readiness to... flee. Ms. Quyt recounted: “After the country was liberated, I came to live here. Every year, there were big floods, water rushing into the house. Landslides also caused houses to collapse. The authorities and local government always provided support, but honestly, having to flee from storms and landslides was very difficult; now, hearing that there will soon be a new, safe place to live, my worries have really lessened.”

According to local residents, decades ago, the village at the foot of Phu Gia Mountain was formed when many families moved here to work and live. Seeing its elevated location at the foot of the mountain, surrounded by abundant trees, the people of Phu Gia village had high hopes of developing the village into a prosperous and thriving community. However, in recent years, due to climate change and unpredictable natural disasters, especially the frequent and prolonged heavy rains, landslides have occurred at the foot of Phu Gia Mountain, causing constant fear among the residents. Most of the houses here are single-story, with tiled or corrugated iron roofs, making them less resistant to natural disasters. Many heavy rains and landslides have damaged houses, fields, and property.

During the rainy season, whenever the local authorities announce a storm, the households living at the foot of Phu Gia mountain have to hastily relocate. Mr. Si shared that for many years, the people have repeatedly petitioned to be moved to a safe place. The local authorities and relevant agencies have also shown great concern, standing by each rainy season to evacuate; at the same time, they have petitioned higher levels to expedite the relocation and resettlement of the people to a safe place. Now, the people's wish is about to come true.

The residents will be resettled in 2026.

Following numerous petitions from local authorities and 32 households in the landslide-prone area at the foot of Phu Gia Mountain, in April 2025, the People's Committee of Hue City approved a project to plant trees and create green spaces at the foot of Phu Gia Mountain, combined with the relocation and resettlement of residents, with an investment of approximately over 65 billion VND. Recently, the project was transferred to the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction in Area 3, Hue City, as the investor. The project includes items such as earth filling, leveling the ground, planting trees, and will arrange for the relocation and resettlement of households in the landslide-prone area at the foot of Phu Gia Mountain.

According to the project approval decision, the land clearance area is 8.65 hectares, including 4.09 hectares of residential land, 1.41 hectares of land for annual crops, 0.54 hectares of land for perennial crops, and 2.62 hectares of rice paddy land. In the resettlement plan, approximately 32 households are required to relocate and are expected to be resettled in the Loc Tien Resettlement Area.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Chan May - Lang Co commune, said: According to the plan, by 2026, households will be relocated to the Loc Tien resettlement area, not far from Phu Gia village, to ensure the safety of lives and property and stabilize livelihoods for the people. “Currently, the commune is coordinating with relevant units to review and complete the procedures to facilitate land clearance. In addition, the locality is actively disseminating information and mobilizing people to understand the project's policies, thereby creating consensus during implementation and will soon relocate people from areas at risk of landslides,” Mr. Tanh said.

Representatives from the Project Management Board for Investment and Construction in Area 3, Hue City, affirmed: The unit will make every effort to carry out its tasks to quickly complete compensation and land clearance procedures so that people can soon move to safe new homes, free from the worries of natural disasters, storms, and landslides.
