Waiting for the day to arrive safely
One day in mid-October 2025, joy was evident on the faces of the people living in the house at the foot of Phu Gia mountain when they witnessed the authorities measuring and inventorying assets to carry out site clearance and resettlement (TDC) work. Mr. Ngo Si (born in 1968) shared: “We are very happy, for over 15 years, every rainy and stormy season has been a month of fear of landslides. Now that we are about to be relocated to a new, safe place, the whole family is very excited.”
In the memory of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Quyt (born in 1952), also Mr. Si's neighbor, every rainy and stormy season was a time of being ready to... run. Mrs. Quyt said: “After the country was liberated, I came here to live. Every year, there was a big flood, water rushed into the house. Landslides also collapsed the house. The authorities and local authorities always cared and supported, but in reality, having to run away from storms and landslides was very miserable; now, hearing that there will soon be a new safe place to live, my worries have really lessened.”
According to the people living here, decades ago, the village at the foot of Phu Gia mountain was formed when many households moved here to do business and live. Looking at the high terrain, at the foot of the mountain, with many trees, the people in Phu Gia village had high hopes to build this village to become spacious and developed. However, in recent years, due to climate change, natural disasters have been unpredictable, especially the area often has many long-lasting heavy rains, leading to landslides and rocks right at the foot of Phu Gia mountain, making the people here very scared. Most of the houses of the people here are level 4 houses, with tiled or corrugated iron roofs, so their resistance to natural disasters is not high. Many heavy rains causing landslides have damaged houses, fields, and property of the people.
During the rainy and stormy season, every time the local authorities notify, the households living at the foot of Phu Gia mountain have to evacuate in a hurry. Mr. Si shared that over the years, people have repeatedly petitioned to be relocated to a safe place. Local authorities and authorities are also very concerned, every rainy and stormy season they are on duty to evacuate; at the same time, they petition to all levels to quickly evacuate and arrange resettlement for people to a safe place. Up to now, the people's wishes are about to come true.
People will be resettled in 2026
After many petitions from the local government and 32 households in the dangerous landslide area at the foot of Phu Gia mountain, in April 2025, the People's Committee of Hue City approved the project (DA) to plant trees to create green areas at the foot of Phu Gia mountain combined with relocating people and resettlement with an investment of about more than 65 billion VND. Recently, the project was transferred to the Management Board of Construction Investment Projects of Area 3, Hue City as the investor. The project includes items such as filling land, leveling the ground, planting trees and will arrange relocation and resettlement for households in the landslide risk area at the foot of Phu Gia mountain.
According to the decision approving the project, the area of land clearance is 8.65 hectares, of which the residential land area is 4.09 hectares, the annual crop land area is 1.41 hectares, the perennial crop land area is 0.54 hectares and the rice land area is 2.62 hectares. In the resettlement plan, for households that are forced to relocate and are arranged for resettlement, about 32 households will be arranged for resettlement, expected to arrive at Loc Tien Resettlement Area.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Chan May - Lang Co Commune, said: According to the plan, by 2026, households will be relocated to Loc Tien Resettlement Area, not far from Phu Gia village, to ensure the safety of people's lives, property, and livelihoods. "Currently, the commune is coordinating with relevant units to review and complete procedures to serve the site clearance work. In addition, the locality is also actively propagating and mobilizing people to understand the project's policy, thereby creating consensus in the implementation process and will soon relocate people out of areas at risk of landslides," said Mr. Tanh.
The representative of the Management Board of Investment and Construction Project of Area 3, Hue City affirmed: The unit will make every effort to carry out the tasks to soon complete the work, compensation procedures, and site clearance so that people can soon move to a new safe place, free from worries about the dangers of natural disasters, storms, and landslides.
