Promoting traditional crafts and integrating them with new occupations.
In Thanh Thuy ward, Ms. Tran Thi Thanh's Thanh An ginger and turmeric processing facility is a vivid example of bold entrepreneurship and innovation right in her hometown.
When she first started, she went door-to-door, listening to feedback and adjusting the product formula many times. These persistent efforts gradually paid off when she connected with various associations and organizations, bringing her product closer to the market. In particular, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Vice Chairman of the City's Cooperative Union, after trying the product, was so satisfied that he helped her connect with organizations such as the Department of Science and Technology and the Trade Promotion Center.
Since April 2024, the Thanh An facility has officially been operational. The initial investment was 350 million VND for the factory and 150 million VND for modern machinery. The raw material sourcing area is located in Loc Dien (formerly Phu Loc) with an area of 5,000m², and additional supplies are also sourced from neighboring households. Currently, the facility has a production capacity of 500 boxes per day, generating revenue of over 500 million VND per year, creating seasonal jobs for 5-7 workers with an income of 5-7 million VND per month. The product has been registered for intellectual property rights, its quality has been certified, and the factory meets food safety and hygiene standards. The product is available at train stations, airports, supermarkets, and many other sales points throughout the city.
Meanwhile, for Ms. Nguyen Thi Kiem, owner of a conical hat making facility in Van The, the reason for preserving and promoting the traditional conical hat making craft is not only to keep her ancestors' skills alive but also to provide employment and income for poor and disadvantaged women during the off-season. Ms. Nguyen Thi Kiem's facility currently employs 10 regular workers. During the tourist season, festivals, or peak periods, the number of workers can increase to 30. In addition to creating jobs and stable income, Ms. Kiem's facility actively participates in many trade promotion activities, helping Van The conical hats reach more domestic and international tourists.
Currently, Thanh Thuy ward has one craft village and one traditional craft recognized by the city: Thanh Lam broom-making village and Van The traditional conical hat making village. These are two key industries that provide stable livelihoods for hundreds of households, especially unemployed women, vulnerable groups, and elderly workers. Van The conical hat making village, in particular, is a typical traditional craft, currently employing 48 households with 56 regular workers.
Opportunity for a breakthrough
According to Ms. Ho Vu Ngoc Loi, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairwoman of the People's Council of Thanh Thuy Ward, the locality always focuses on developing traditional crafts, considering them as a foundation for creating sustainable livelihoods for the people while preserving the unique identity of the region.
Many other small-scale handicraft industries have been supported and developed, such as the production of building materials, wood processing, mechanics, essential oils, and the making of reed brooms and bamboo brooms. These trades have contributed to creating stable jobs for rural workers.
Currently, the ward has one OCOP 3-star certified product: Thuy Thanh fragrant rice; and two projects supported for OCOP product development, including a set of bitter melon tea bags and dried bitter melon products, and a set of Hue essential oil products under the Kim Vui brand. In 2024, the ward will have another 3-star certified product: the Thanh Toan tiled bridge community tourism destination.
Not content with just traditional and handicraft production models, Thanh Thuy ward is gradually expanding its industrial development to create a strong breakthrough in its economic structure. In the Thuy Phuong Industrial Cluster, 64 businesses are registered; of which 38 have received land lease decisions and 36 are operating stably, providing employment for 983 workers. Two businesses are currently completing procedures to begin operations soon.
Notably, the locality has also added to the planning and proposed investment in the Thuy Phuong 2 Industrial Cluster with a scale of 65.3 hectares to attract businesses to develop infrastructure in the future. In addition, Hue Textile and Garment Joint Stock Company continues to be a major pillar, providing employment for 4,489 workers and generating revenue of over 1,845 billion VND per year.
