On the morning of December 7, artisans and extras from the Co Tu ethnic group in Song Kon commune, Da Nang city reenacted an excerpt from the twinning ceremony as part of the December activity "Welcoming the New Year" at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism .
The twinning ceremony is one of the typical cultural features representing the humanistic spirit, solidarity, respect for friendship and community spirit of the Co Tu people.
The oath-taking ceremony - called by the Co Tu people as prônggooch, means pơliêm (making a better relationship), pơ âm (inviting each other to drink wine to maintain a close, affectionate relationship). Because of that meaning, the oath-taking ceremony that exists until now promotes harmony, cohesion and community spirit between villages and villages, communes and communes.
In the past, the Co Tu people held a ceremony to become brothers when two sides had a conflict. To prevent the conflict from lasting and affecting their lives, one side would take the initiative to become brothers so that the relationship between the two sides would be harmonious and close.
Nowadays, the twinning ceremony is held not because of conflicts but to maintain an increasingly good and united relationship, thereby helping each other develop the economy, eliminate hunger and reduce poverty, maintain political security, cultural exchange, develop tourism, etc. At the same time, the twinning ceremony is held to contribute to strengthening the great solidarity in the community.
At the reenactment program, the Co Tu people introduced excerpts of the main rituals of the twinning ceremony between Song Kon commune and Dong Giang commune ( Da Nang city), in which Song Kon commune was the proactive twinning party.
The two sides performed a joint worship ceremony to pray to the gods, the heavens and the earth to witness the twinning ceremony of the two communes. When the ceremony was completed, the two sides invited each other to drink, showing that from now on the relationship would be increasingly good, the brotherhood and friendship would last forever. The sound of drums and gongs resounded along with the Tan Tung Da Da dance to celebrate the successful twinning ceremony.
Reenacting the twinning ceremony of the Co Tu ethnic group is one of many activities at the Co Tu ethnic village space in the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism, taking place on December 6-7, 2025.
