Import-export turnover reached over 1.3 billion USD
According to the Lao Cai Department of Industry and Trade, the total value of import and export, purchase and sale, and exchange of goods through Lao Cai border gates in the first 8 months of 2023 reached more than 1.3 billion USD, down 9.78% over the same period in 2022 and equal to 26.06% of the yearly plan.
Of which, the export value reached over 575 million USD, down 9.81% over the same period in 2022 and equal to 26.77% of the annual plan; the import value reached over 331 million USD, down 14.08% over the same period in 2022 and equal to 38.09% of the annual plan; other types reached 396.18 million USD, down 5.78% over the same period in 2022 and equal to 20.01% of the annual plan.
The decline in import and export goods is due to the difficult situation in import markets, which makes the demand for imported goods low.

Goods exported through Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate No. II are mainly traditional items such as peeled wood, dried cassava, fresh fruits (dragon fruit, rambutan, fresh banana, durian).
Main imports are coke, fertilizers, vegetables, ornamental plants, chemicals and equipment.
At the International Railway Station Border Gate, the main goods cleared are transit sulfur and imported fertilizers. Customs clearance activities are maintained with 4-6 import-export trains/day.

Lao Cai is the second locality in the country, after Lang Son province, to deploy digital border gates in handling customs clearance procedures for import and export of goods at Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate.
For individuals and businesses participating in import and export through Lao Cai border gate, instead of going to each department as before, they now only have to go to the Center for receiving and handling administrative procedures at the border gate to submit documents and wait for results.

Lao Cai's goal is to bring the value of import and export goods to 15 billion USD by 2030.
In addition, Lao Cai Border Gate Economic Zone will be built into an important logistics center, a trade center connecting Vietnam and ASEAN countries with the markets of Southwest China and Europe. It will be connected to the Hanoi - Lao Cai expressway, the Hai Phong - Hanoi - Lao Cai railway, the Red River border waterway and Sa Pa Airport to be the driving force for growth and development. At the same time, many policies will be implemented to promote socio-economic development and import - export in the province.
