The submarine, named Yakutsk, is the last of a series of six Project 636.3 submarines built for the Russian Pacific Fleet.
Russian Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief Igor Mukhametshin stated that the launching of the Yakutsk submarine is of great significance to the entire Russian Navy, and marks the completion of all six submarines of this class on schedule.Mukhametshin stated that Varshavyanka-class submarines are equipped with high-precision weapons, capable of handling any mission in any area of the world's oceans.
In September 2016, the Admiralty shipyard signed a contract with the Russian Navy to build six submarines of this class for the Pacific Fleet.
The Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine is designed to destroy enemy surface ships and warships, submarines, conduct patrols and reconnaissance, and protect communications in near-shore waters. These submarines are 74 meters long, with a maximum displacement of over 3,900 tons. They are equipped with Kalibr-PL cruise missiles launched from torpedo tubes from a submerged position.
