The journey of bringing traditional Vietnamese music into school life.
In the 2018 General Education Program, the Art subject at the lower secondary level has the mission of nurturing the soul, developing aesthetic abilities, and stimulating creativity in students. But more than that, music also sows the seeds of compassion, forms qualities of honesty and responsibility, and helps students feel, understand, and love the cultural values of the nation even more.
At Ngo Gia Tu Secondary School, music education has been implemented seriously and with great dedication for many years. However, reality also presents many challenges: some students and parents still view it as a secondary subject; facilities and conditions for organizing experiential activities are limited; and opportunities for music to be connected to real-world situations are not yet widely available. Therefore, the school has boldly registered to implement a city-level thematic project to create a breakthrough in art teaching and learning, to inspire new ideas in teachers and students, and to aim for holistic education.
With the close guidance of the leaders of the Department of Education and Training, the Secondary Education Department, and especially the subject specialist, the teachers and students of the school completed the preparation process in just under a month – and today they are confidently presenting the thematic report "Hai Phong – the cradle of Ca Tru in the Northern Coastal region," a content of the local education program after the merger of Hai Phong and Hai Duong .

This is not only a testament to the creativity in implementing the education program, but also a response to the pride of the people of the East – a land that embodies unique cultural traditions and the strong aspirations for development of the port city.
Spreading the values of Ca Tru – empowering the younger generation of Hai Phong.
Hai Phong is striving to become a leading economic center while also aiming to become a "city of music" with its own unique identity. To achieve this, the foundation of its identity and traditional musical heritage is indispensable – with Ca Tru being the soul of the Northern Coastal region.
The thematic unit was designed as an integrated experiential journey, taking students back to traditional melodies, to the performance spaces of the past, and to the image of dedicated artisans keeping the art alive. Teachers and students at Ngo Gia Tu Secondary School researched to understand that Ca Tru is not just a memory, but a living material, a source of cultural energy silently contributing to the unique identity of the city. From the East to the West of Hai Phong, everywhere bears the mark of Ca Tru villages and artisans who have dedicated their lives to preserving and passing on this art form to future generations.

The thematic report also outlines clear action plans: persistently upholding the three pillars of "preservation - transmission - creation"; establishing Ca Tru clubs in schools; creating regular performance environments so that Ca Tru is not only heard but also "lived with"; connecting students and artisans; promoting Ca Tru on digital media platforms such as YouTube, podcasts, and social media; and integrating Ca Tru into cultural and tourism activities, transforming the heritage into a unique experiential product of Hai Phong.
Integrating Ca Tru into education is not simply about teaching singing, but about instilling a love for culture, an appreciation for heritage, and a responsibility to preserve national identity in a modern context. A city of music should not only resonate with modern sounds, but also be imbued with traditional elements – something that today's topic is contributing to fostering.
Community collaboration – the foundation for success.
The large-scale nature of this event is the result of the combined efforts of many organizations and individuals. The school extends its gratitude to the leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training, the leaders of the Hai Phong Department of Education and Training, the Secondary Education Department, artisans, artists, local authorities, parents, and especially the teachers and students who worked with extraordinary intensity to complete all the content.

Furthermore, this event also acknowledged the responsible and enthusiastic participation of many social organizations. The school sincerely thanks the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism for supporting the venue and organizational conditions; and thanks Hai Duong Clean Water Business Joint Stock Company for sponsoring drinking water for the thematic workshop – a small but significant act in supporting art education. The Ca Tru clubs in the city also contributed by providing performance costumes, helping to authentically recreate the traditional art space.
It is these valuable collaborations that have created a truly effective and practical model of socialization, which needs to be widely disseminated – so that art education does not rely solely on school resources but on the shared responsibility of the community.
The feedback from delegates and other schools will also be a valuable source of motivation to help the school improve in future implementations.

Representatives from the Department of Education and Training's professional division highly appreciated the efforts of the teachers and students of Ngo Gia Tu Secondary School, while emphasizing the need for proactive innovation in teaching and learning, and increased application of digital technology to meet the goals of the 2018 General Education Program. Following the merger, the Department's professional team has become increasingly strong; activities like today's thematic workshop should be replicated to raise the quality of education throughout the city.
This thematic approach has brought Ca Tru – an intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO – closer to students through innovative and creative methods linked to digital transformation. This not only contributes to the implementation of Resolution 71 of the Politburo on educational reform but also helps students develop aesthetic abilities, cultural pride, and an awareness of preserving heritage.
We believe that after this workshop, every student in Hai Phong will emerge with a richer emotional spirit, greater understanding, and a deeper connection to the cultural heritage of their homeland. And from the Ca Tru songs imbued with humanistic values, they will learn to cherish the past to build the future – so that the melodies of this heritage will forever resonate in the hearts of the young generation of the port city.
The thematic project "Hai Phong – the cradle of Ca Tru in the Northern Coastal region" is therefore not only a professional activity but also a bridge connecting tradition and modernity, heritage and the future, the pride and responsibility of young citizens on the journey to building a civilized, creative, and distinctive Hai Phong.
