Two more specialty products announced to have trademark certification

To promote the development of local traditional products, the Department of Science and Technology of Lao Cai province, in coordination with the People's Committee of Bac Ha district, organized a conference to announce the certification marks "Bac Ha Green Rice Flakes" and "Bac Ha Black Sticky Rice Cakes" for eligible households.

Black sticky rice cake (Bánh chưng đen) is a long-standing traditional specialty of the ethnic minority communities in Bac Ha district. It is prepared by the locals using traditional methods and locally produced ingredients, including charcoal powder from the Nuc nac tree to create its unique color. With its distinctive, rich flavor of pork belly, the aroma of upland sticky rice, and wild cardamom, Bac Ha black sticky rice cake is a favorite among tourists visiting the region.

Bac Ha sticky rice flakes are a unique product, deeply rooted in the distinct cultural characteristics of the ethnic minorities in Bac Ha. The way the locals make these rice flakes is also very different, thanks to secret recipes passed down through generations. Each grain of rice flake is green, fragrant, and chewy, making it easy to eat without being cloying. Tourists can buy them and store them in the refrigerator for long-term use while still maintaining their delicious quality.

For decades, following the policy of Lao Cai province that each locality should develop its own unique products to promote tourism , the ethnic minority people in Bac Ha have developed sticky rice flakes (Com) and black sticky rice cakes (Banh Chung Den) into local specialties.

By June 2022, the People's Committee of Bac Ha district had directed the implementation of the project to build the certification marks "Bac Ha Black Sticky Rice Cake" and "Bac Ha Green Rice Flakes," fulfilling the aspirations of local people to develop specialty product economies.

After numerous research and survey phases encompassing various aspects such as: document collection and investigation, sample collection; establishing criteria for registering the certification mark; identifying the certification body for the "Bac Ha Black Sticky Rice Cake" and "Bac Ha Green Rice Flakes"; designing the certification mark template and a system of product promotion channels; developing and issuing regulations for the management and use of the certification mark; and preparing the application dossier for product certification mark registration.

After two years of project implementation and a period of application review and approval, the Vietnam Intellectual Property Office has granted Certificates of Right to Use the Certification Mark "Bac Ha Black Sticky Rice Cake" to 20 eligible individuals and households.

Simultaneously, Certificates of Right to Use the "Bac Ha Rice Flakes" Certification Mark were granted to 25 eligible individuals and households. The validity period of the right to use the "Bac Ha Rice Flakes" Certification Mark is stipulated in the Certificate. Individuals and households are responsible for complying with relevant regulations and contributing any required fees for the use of the certification mark (if any).

The certification marks "Bac Ha sticky rice flakes" and "Bac Ha black sticky rice cakes" not only affirm the quality and brand of the products but also contribute positively to the economic development of ethnic minority communities in the locality.
