With the "dragon's eye" fruit in season and prices doubling compared to last year, residents of a commune in Hoa Binh province are earning a substantial income.

As the longan harvest season approaches, the people of Xuan Thuy commune, Kim Boi district, Hoa Binh province are excited, their joy evident on their faces as their longans fetch high prices.
In early August, the people of Khoang hamlet, Xuan Thuy commune, are busy harvesting longan.
Everyone in Khoang village was overjoyed; this year, longan fruit was selling at a high price. The joy was evident on everyone's faces.
According to residents of Khoang hamlet, at the beginning of the harvest season, longan is sold by households at 20,000 VND/kg. The price traders pay at the orchard ranges from 15,000 to 17,000 VND/kg.
“This year, our family's longan orchard is expected to yield 30 tons of longan. The yield is slightly lower than in previous years, but this year we're getting a good price. With an early-season selling price of 20,000 VND/kg, after deducting all expenses, the family expects to earn around 300-400 million VND,” said Mr. Bui Van Luc (wearing a white shirt).
Mr. Bui Van Thieu from Khoang hamlet shared: “My family currently cultivates 2 hectares of longan trees, and we've been harvesting them for the past four days. From the start of harvesting until today, we've harvested about 3 tons. The longan is sold to customers in Hai Duong and Hanoi at 15,000 VND/kg; if the quality is good, the price will be slightly higher. Compared to last year, the price is much higher. All the longan growers are very happy.”
Similarly, Ms. Quach Thi Tuc, from Khoang hamlet (far right), excitedly said: “This year, longan is being bought directly from the orchards by traders at 17,000 VND/kg, about 7,000-8,000 VND/kg higher than last year. Farmers are very happy because they are selling at a high price this year. My family cultivates more than 2,000 square meters, and from the beginning of the season until now, we have harvested about 3 tons of longan. If we sell it all, we will earn more than 50 million VND.”
According to Mr. Bui Khuyen Dinh, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Xuan Thuy commune, Kim Boi district, with an early season selling price of 20,000 VND/kg, this year's longan price is about twice as high as last year.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kim Boi district, the total area of longan cultivation in the district is approximately 360 hectares, of which about 180 hectares are in Xuan Thuy commune. The two longan varieties grown locally are Huong Chi longan and Mien longan.
