On the afternoon of June 1st, the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) held its May 2023 briefing conference. Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Member of the Standing Committee of the Central Military Commission, Chief of the General Staff of the VPA, and Deputy Minister of National Defense, chaired the conference.
Attending the conference were the Deputy Chiefs of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army: Senior General Huynh Chien Thang, Member of the Central Committee of the Party; Lieutenant General Nguyen Doan Anh, Member of the Central Committee of the Party; Senior General Phung Si Tan; Senior General Nguyen Van Nghia; and Major General Pham Truong Son. Also present were commanders of functional agencies of the Ministry of National Defense and the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

After listening to reports from agencies and units and the opinions of some delegates at the conference, General Nguyen Tan Cuong commended the outstanding results achieved by the agencies and units in the past period. Evaluating the results of work in May 2023, General Nguyen Tan Cuong emphasized that the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army had directed the entire army to successfully implement and complete its tasks. Highlights include: maintaining strict combat readiness, closely monitoring the situation, providing timely advice, effectively handling situations, preventing passivity and surprises, and firmly protecting the independence, sovereignty , and territorial integrity of the Fatherland.
Training and education for personnel were conducted according to the correct content, programs, and plans; the "three-shot" test for new recruits was conducted safely and with better results than the previous year. Training, drills, competitions, and sports events were organized effectively and efficiently. The organization of forces was strictly implemented, ensuring weapons and equipment for all tasks. Strategies and projects were completed and reported to the Standing Committee of the Central Military Commission and the Central Military Commission on schedule. Regarding the direction for implementing tasks in June 2023, the Chief of General Staff requested that the entire army strictly maintain the duty roster and combat readiness; closely monitor and grasp the situation, especially in key areas, borders, land, air, and sea; strengthen patrols and controls to prevent illegal entry and exit along the border; disseminate information and prevent foreign vessels from encroaching on Vietnam's territorial waters and protect the safety of Vietnam's maritime economic activities; and intensify the implementation of measures to prevent and combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.
Proactively advise and propose effective solutions to situations, avoiding passivity and surprises, firmly protecting independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity; coordinate with functional forces to maintain political security and social order throughout the country. Report to the Prime Minister on the planning of the national defense system, military zones, ammunition depots, and defense industry; the planning of national defense land use for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050; continue to develop the draft Law on People's Air Defense…
Directing agencies and units to organize training for personnel, ensuring the content, program, and plan are followed; inspecting the training results of phase 1 in 2023. Strengthening the quality of regularization and discipline management; building relationships between officers and soldiers, new and veteran soldiers; enhancing military control activities, promptly correcting military personnel and military equipment operating outside barracks; patrolling and guarding to ensure the safety of agencies and units.

Maintain strict readiness for rescue and relief operations at all levels, proactively monitor the situation, advise and propose the use of forces and resources, and promptly handle any situations. To successfully complete the assigned tasks, the Chief of General Staff requested that leaders and commanders of agencies and units uphold a high sense of responsibility, constantly monitor the situation, implement comprehensive and flexible solutions, and carry out their duties decisively and thoroughly, ensuring quality and stability.
