Bao Phuong mooncakes ( Hanoi ) were established in 1954, almost 70 years ago. The shop was opened by Mr. Pham Vi Bao on Thuy Khue Street, Tay Ho District. Today, the shop is continued and developed by Mr. Bao's children and grandchildren. In the days leading up to the Mid-Autumn Festival, both locations are always crowded. During peak hours, hundreds of people have to queue.
Bao Phuong mooncakes come with a variety of fillings, among which the "traditional" mixed fillings of ham, melon seeds, and Chinese sausage are very popular. Each mooncake costs between 55,000 and 80,000 VND depending on the type.
According to Mr. Pham Hai Dang, the third-generation successor of Bao Phuong bakery, the shop employs 120-130 staff to serve customers during the Mid-Autumn Festival season.
While Hanoi boasts the Bao Phuong brand, Hai Phong is famous for its Dong Phuong mooncakes: thin crust, not-too-sweet filling, fragrant with lime leaves, and retaining traditional flavors. In recent years, this brand has attracted a large number of customers from various provinces and cities such as Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh , Ninh Binh, etc.
About a week before the Mid-Autumn Festival, to get the first mooncakes, many people waited from 1-2 am. Some even brought pillows, spread mats, and rugs on the sidewalk to sleep and eat on the spot. At times, the shop had to put up signs announcing a temporary closure because they couldn't keep up with the demand.
The mooncakes here come in many varieties, but the most popular is the traditional mixed-filling type, priced from 60,000 to 70,000 VND per piece. Each box contains 4 pieces. If customers don't have time to wait in line, they can ask someone queuing to buy the mooncakes for them, with a service fee of 40,000 to 80,000 VND per box. The shop also makes many types of mooncakes with abalone, bird's nest, and shark fin fillings, with prices reaching millions of VND.
In Ho Chi Minh City, when it comes to mooncakes, customers often immediately think of Nhu Lan bakery.
Nhu Lan Bakery on Ham Nghi Street, District 1, has been a familiar address for many people in Ho Chi Minh City for over 50 years. From the beginning of August, the shop starts displaying many types of traditional mooncakes. The shop offers a wide variety of fillings, including mung bean, coconut, durian, green tea, lotus seed, shark fin, bird's nest, roast chicken, mixed nuts… and even vegetarian options. Prices range from 50,000 to 430,000 VND per cake.
Similar to Dong Phuong or Bao Phuong, in the days leading up to the Mid-Autumn Festival, the number of customers lining up at Nhu Lan bakery is also very large, and the staff always have to work at maximum capacity.
Dong Hung Vien is also a familiar brand to people in Ho Chi Minh City, famous for its mixed-filling and mung bean-filled mooncakes, priced from 56,000 to 90,000 VND per piece (depending on weight). In addition, many other mooncake varieties with ingredients such as salted egg yolk, Chinese sausage, shark fin, grapes, durian, etc., have also been created to add diversity and appeal.
