VNA (Vietnam News Agency) respectfully presents the speech by General Secretary To Lam at the Ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press Day.

Distinguished leaders and former leaders of the Party, State, and Vietnam Fatherland Front ,

To the esteemed veteran journalists and revolutionary journalists of Vietnam,

Distinguished delegates, readers, and viewers nationwide,

Today, in a solemn, moving, and proud atmosphere, we solemnly celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025) - a century of companionship with the nation, a glorious journey written with the intellect and soul of the nation, with the revolutionary spirit of attack, with the noble sacrifices and tireless efforts of Vietnamese revolutionary journalists. On behalf of the Party, State, and Vietnam Fatherland Front leadership, I respectfully extend my deepest gratitude and best wishes to the leaders, former leaders of the Party and State, distinguished guests, and generations of journalists.

I also warmly congratulate the revolutionary journalists of Vietnam on receiving, for the second time, the prestigious award bestowed by the Party, State, and People: the "Ho Chi Minh Order" for their many contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.

Dear comrades and distinguished delegates,

On his journey to find a way to save the country, imbued with the national spirit and a yearning to bring a prosperous and happy life to the people, our President Ho Chi Minh encountered Marxism-Leninism. The patriotic young man Nguyen Tat Thanh soon recognized the particularly important role of journalism in the cause of national liberation and the liberation of the people.

The revolutionary Nguyen Ai Quoc founded Thanh Nien Newspaper, the official publication of the "Vietnam Revolutionary Youth League."

On June 21, 1925, the first issue of Thanh Nien (Youth) newspaper was published, marking the birth of revolutionary journalism in Vietnam, sowing the seeds for a journalistic movement with the mission of liberating the nation, awakening revolutionary will, and spreading the light of Marxism-Leninism to the patriotic movement.

This was not only the beginning of a new era of journalism, but it was also a historically significant turning point for the Vietnamese Revolution, and one of the important preparatory steps for the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1930.

From that initial "seed," under the guidance of journalist Nguyen Ai Quoc, and with the vigorous development of the revolutionary movement, Vietnamese revolutionary journalism has continuously grown stronger.

Pioneering revolutionaries and journalists such as Nguyen Van Cu, Ha Huy Tap, Le Duan, Truong Chinh, Vo Nguyen Giap, Phan Dang Luu, Nguyen Van Linh, Xuan Thuy… and later the late journalist and former General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, along with other leaders, propagandists, and journalists who were leaders of the Party and State, left a profound mark through their insightful and theoretically rich articles on communism, patriotism, revolutionary inspiration, and national pride. Through these articles, they propagated theory, encouraged movements, organized revolutionary forces, and transformed journalism into a sharp weapon in the struggle for national liberation, leading to earth-shattering revolutions, culminating in the August Revolution of 1945 – shattering the shackles of colonialism and fascism, ending the remnants of the backward feudal regime, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and ushering in an era of national independence linked with socialism, lifting our people from a state of slavery. The goal is for Vietnam to become the master of its own country and position itself on the world political map.

The 100-year history of revolutionary journalism in Vietnam is a vivid testament to the immense role of the pen in the struggle for national independence, and in building and defending the socialist Fatherland.

Before the existence of the Party and the Government, the press was the guiding spirit, shaping ideology and policies, a light pointing the way to the future; it united the masses, built the political party, and built the state.

In the midst of war, the press was a sharp weapon, more powerful than bombs, tanks, or cannons, conveying the spirit of resistance, courage, and the aspiration for independence, calling on the entire nation to fight for liberation and national reunification.

In building, protecting, and developing the country, the press serves as a bridge between the Party, the State, and the people; it is a reliable forum for the people, a source of strength and inspiration for the entire nation on the path towards a prosperous, independent, free, and sustainable future.

From hand-printed newspapers in the jungles of the war zone to today's multimedia news agencies, from handwritten articles under bombs and bullets to modern tools applying information technology and artificial intelligence, Vietnamese revolutionary journalists have affirmed their courage, intellect, dedication, creativity, and unwavering loyalty to their ideals, always staying close to real life and sharing the breath and rhythm of the people.

Throughout the long history of national renewal initiated and led by our Party, the press has not only been a witness but also a direct force promoting the process of reform, opening up, and international integration.

The press has played a crucial role in shaping and developing a democratic, civilized society with diverse and truthful information, contributing to raising public awareness, creating social consensus, strengthening the control of power, and connecting the people with the Party and the Party with the people.

In recent years, the Vietnamese press has proactively innovated its content, form, technology, and journalistic mindset. With nearly 800 media outlets and tens of thousands of journalists, reporters, and editors, the journalistic workforce has been continuously innovating and strongly applying digital technology, artificial intelligence, and advanced scientific and technological achievements to create a new, modern, humane, and people-oriented journalistic image, style, and content.

The press is also a leading force in promoting the image of Vietnam and its people to the world, demonstrating Vietnam's solidarity and responsibility towards friends, progressive forces, and the development of the world; the press is a means to spread national cultural values, awaken patriotism, aspirations for development, and affirm Vietnamese cultural identity in the era of integration.

As a cultural product, journalism brings out the beauty of life, discovers and honors good people and good deeds, innovative models, effective methods, and multiplies positive values in society.

Through its humanistic works, journalism contributes to shaping public thinking, encouraging a beautiful lifestyle, spreading a spirit of responsibility and a desire to contribute, and building Vietnamese culture and people to meet the requirements of sustainable national development.

In a rapidly changing, complex, and multifaceted world, revolutionary journalism has consistently maintained its role as a pioneering force in maintaining political stability, strengthening social consensus, firmly protecting national sovereignty, proactively combating erroneous and hostile viewpoints, and safeguarding the Party's ideological foundation.

As a sharp ideological weapon of the Party, the press has responsibly and actively participated in disseminating the Party's policies and guidelines on digital transformation, sustainable development, environmental protection, preservation of national cultural identity, and comprehensive and profound international integration.

In particular, over the past years, the press has made outstanding contributions to the fight against corruption, waste, and negative practices. Many investigative reports and analytical articles have shed light on the truth, helping functional agencies handle violations, and strengthening the people's trust in the strictness of the law and the political determination of the Party and the State.

In this field, journalism has become one of the sharpest and most courageous "spearheads" in bringing the truth to light, protecting what is right, preserving what is good, and relentlessly fighting against what is wrong, bad, and evil.

During natural disasters and epidemics, especially the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the press became the "front line of information," spreading compassion, encouraging resilience, and instilling faith in victory.

It can be affirmed that the revolutionary press of Vietnam has been and is fulfilling its noble mission – building trust, fostering consensus, spreading aspirations for development, and contributing to the realization of the goal of building a strong, prosperous, and happy Vietnam in the new era.

On behalf of the Party and State leaders, I wholeheartedly commend and respectfully acknowledge the significant contributions of the Vietnamese revolutionary press throughout its 100-year journey of development and growth.

The achievements of revolutionary Vietnamese journalism under the leadership of the Party are the culmination of the ideals, tireless creative labor, and dedication to the Fatherland and the People of generations of Vietnamese journalists.

Dear comrades and distinguished delegates,

The new era for the nation is opening up new horizons for development, while also posing new revolutionary demands with high determination and great aspirations to build a strong and prosperous country.

In this context, the revolutionary press of Vietnam must further affirm its revolutionary character and pioneering role on the ideological and cultural front, serving as an ideological pillar and a vanguard force in building trust and consensus in society; making a significant contribution to multiplying humanistic and progressive values, strongly spreading the spirit of innovation and creativity, and inspiring learning, work, and dedication.

The press must constantly innovate to develop in line with the times and the country's development, truly becoming a professional, humane, and modern press that serves the cause of the Party, the State, and the People on the journey of building and developing the country.

To meet that requirement, I propose that media organizations and journalists focus on effectively carrying out the following key tasks:

Firstly, in the new era of the Vietnamese nation, press agencies and journalists need to deeply understand their exceptionally noble political and social responsibilities to the Party, the State, and the People.

Revolutionary journalism must be the voice of the Party, the State, and socio-political organizations; a reliable forum for the people; a bridge connecting the Party's will with the people's aspirations; effectively fulfilling the task of conveying the Party and State's policies and guidelines to the people; creating an environment for the people to participate in journalistic activities, reflecting the legitimate thoughts and aspirations of the people to the Party and the State; ensuring the ideological, political, and people-oriented nature of journalism; and mobilizing the strength of the people to participate in building a cleaner and stronger Party and political system.

As soldiers on the ideological and cultural front, journalists must be exemplary in professional ethics, firm in ideology and political stance, loyal to revolutionary ideals, truly professional, skilled in their field, courageous in fighting against negative manifestations, and resilient to temptations; journalists must be reputable social activists; they must be propagandists and mass mobilization workers; and they must actively participate in people-to-people diplomacy.

Under all circumstances, political responsibility, social responsibility, and professional ethics must be prioritized above all else; each journalistic work must effectively fulfill its function of providing accurate, objective, truthful, humane, and useful information. Journalists in the modern era must constantly learn, hone their skills, and integrate modern technology.

Secondly, revolutionary journalism is an inseparable part of the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation. It must possess a revolutionary spirit of offensive action, bravely fight against and eliminate evil, stagnation, and backwardness; actively promote and encourage new and progressive ideas; be pioneering and courageous in addressing major and new issues facing the country; and not shy away from or compromise with any manifestations that hinder the revolutionary cause.

The press must truly become a leading force, inspiring creativity, encouraging innovation and a desire for contribution among cadres, Party members, and the entire society. In the current revolutionary period, the press needs to breathe new life into the country, awaken determination, patriotism, and a spirit of dedication throughout society, creating a great and enduring spiritual impetus for national development in the new era.

Thirdly , as an important component of cultural life, the press must clearly affirm its role in building an advanced Vietnamese culture rich in national identity; it must actively participate in the cultural revival and the development of modern Vietnamese people with rich cultural identity.

Every journalist and every media organization must be a symbol of cultural conduct, ethical standards, and a spirit of service to society; contributing to preserving and promoting traditional humanistic values, spreading goodness and beauty; actively promoting the image of Vietnam and its people to the world; and proactively absorbing the finest aspects of human culture to enrich the national cultural identity.

Fourth , in the face of the digital transformation wave and fierce competition in the global media space, journalism must quickly adapt, pioneer strong innovation in thinking, master technology, and make breakthroughs in journalistic methods and information dissemination.

Strengthening the presence of revolutionary journalism on social media platforms and maintaining the information and propaganda front against the development of cross-border platforms is an essential requirement for journalism to master the information and communication front in cyberspace and enhance the value of each media organization.

Key media outlets such as Nhan Dan Newspaper, Communist Magazine, Vietnam News Agency, Voice of Vietnam Radio, Vietnam Television, and several online portals of central agencies need to focus intensely on digital transformation, strengthen cooperation and integration, perform their forecasting roles well, and effectively fulfill their information guidance functions, thus deserving to be considered "lighthouses" for the revolutionary press system of the country.

Fifth , innovate the thinking of leadership, guidance, and management of the press towards building and creating an operating environment where the press can best promote its revolutionary nature and mission of serving the country and the people. Clearly define the functions and tasks of each agency, resolutely avoiding doing things for others or micromanaging.

Institutionalize the Party's policies and perfect the legal system for the press to ensure consistency, transparency, modernity, and effectiveness. Continue to effectively implement the planning and restructuring of press agencies towards a streamlined, efficient, and effective operation.

There are solutions to overcome the overlapping functions and responsibilities among press agencies; resolutely removing from the ranks of journalists those who have lost their fighting spirit, faded revolutionary ideals, or engaged in acts that violate professional ethics or regulations of the agency or organization...

Strengthening the application of science and technology and big data to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information contributes to improving the quality of information dissemination in a proactive, timely, persuasive, effective, and practical manner.

Establish a transparent and open ordering mechanism, providing targeted support to press agencies to effectively fulfill their political tasks, especially in key areas, strategic locations, and sensitive fields. Develop national leading press agencies and corporations that play a role in guiding information; establish appropriate mechanisms to develop the revolutionary journalism profession.

Dear comrades and distinguished delegates.

Building on the glorious tradition of 100 years of formation and development, the revolutionary press of Vietnam must continue to strive strongly, affirming its pioneering role on the ideological and cultural front, serving the cause of national development.

Vietnamese journalists must truly be vanguard fighters, possessing unwavering political resolve, a spirit of innovation, and a desire to contribute and dedicate themselves to the common cause of the nation. The press must become a force for building trust, encouraging aspirations for development, and contributing to the realization of the goal of building a strong, prosperous, and enduring Vietnam in this era of national progress.

Wishing all journalists and delegates good health, happiness, and success!

Thank you very much!
