On August 6th, at the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (SIHUB), the workshop "Promoting Innovation in the Logistics Sector Post-Integration" brought together experts, managers, and businesses. The workshop participants unanimously agreed that digital transformation is a mandatory requirement and a vital factor for the logistics industry to thrive in the new context.
Opportunities for post-integration logistics development
According to experts, the merger of Ho Chi Minh City with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces has opened up vast opportunities for logistics service development, creating favorable conditions for more comprehensive and strategic planning. Seaports, international airports, and industrial zones are closely connected within a unified management system, forming a seamless logistics network that reduces transportation costs and travel time.
Mr. Le Van Danh, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, said: “Instead of each province developing logistics separately, the consolidation helps to form a 'super city' that can optimize infrastructure. Cai Mep - Thi Vai Port, the industrial park system in Binh Duong , and the transportation connections of Ho Chi Minh City will be linked more effectively, enhancing international competitiveness.”
According to Mr. Danh, a comprehensive logistics plan will help the city establish key logistics centers, enhancing the capacity for supplying and transshipping goods to serve both domestic and export markets.
Mr. Le Van Danh, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, shared this information at the workshop.
In the context of deep integration and the rapid development of e-commerce, the logistics industry is facing many new challenges. Digital transformation, operational optimization, and improved service quality have become urgent requirements.
Mr. Tran Trong Tuyen, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City, stated: “The logistics industry of the city and the country is facing great opportunities and challenges. To anticipate new development trends, promoting innovation is no longer an option but a mandatory requirement.”
Responding to practical needs, SIHUB Ho Chi Minh City has launched a program to select innovative and startup projects in the logistics sector. The program focuses on solving five major problems: building a shared data warehouse; developing a geographic information system (GIS); applying information and communication technology and digital transformation; managing logistics in e-commerce; and developing green and sustainable logistics.
Selected projects will receive support in incubation, product and business model development, investment networking, intellectual property consulting, and other support services.
According to the planning orientation until 2030, Ho Chi Minh City aims to become an international logistics center. The project for the development of the logistics industry until 2025, with an orientation to 2030, was approved by the People's Committee of the city in Decision No. 4432/QD-UBND dated December 2, 2020, focusing on key tasks such as: developing logistics infrastructure, reducing service costs, enhancing competitiveness, and increasing the contribution to GRDP.
In addition, the city is implementing Plan No. 1831/KH-UBND dated June 6, 2022, on the digital transformation of the logistics industry for the period 2022-2025, with a vision to 2030. The main focus of the plan is to build a digital logistics map, a centralized data warehouse, and a platform connecting multimodal transport services.
In addition, Plan No. 5276/KH-UBND dated September 9, 2024, on strengthening investment in logistics infrastructure development has been issued to promote investment in logistics centers, warehousing systems, seaports, and inter-regional transportation connections.
Mr. Danh affirmed: “The city will focus on developing large-scale logistics zones, anticipating global supply chains. The formation of five free trade zones (FTZs) as planned will create new growth momentum for the city's socio-economic development.”
Mr. Tran Trong Tuyen, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City, delivered a speech at the workshop.
Supporting businesses and developing human resources.
The city also places special emphasis on supporting startups in the logistics sector. According to a representative from SIHUB, startups participating in the program will receive support in terms of workspace, in-depth training, business model consulting, and investor connections.
Simultaneously, the city prioritizes the training and development of human resources. Ho Chi Minh City aims to become the national center for training high-quality logistics human resources, meeting the requirements of developing modern logistics services.
Ms. Le Thi Thuy Trang, a logistics training expert at ONEX Training, shared: “Human resources are a decisive factor in the success of digital transformation and innovation. The city needs to strengthen cooperation between businesses and training institutions to provide human resources that are suitable for practical needs.”

The city is also actively implementing regional linkage programs to promote cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City and provinces and cities in the Southern key economic region. Linking seaports, airports, logistics systems, and distribution centers will create an efficient supply chain and enhance regional competitiveness.
According to experts, Ho Chi Minh City possesses the full potential to become an international logistics hub thanks to its strategic location, diverse infrastructure, and favorable investment environment. However, achieving this goal requires close coordination among departments, agencies, businesses, and organizations supporting innovation.
Mr. Tuyen emphasized: "With the unity and determination from the government, the business community, and related organizations, the city's logistics industry will experience strong development in the coming time, making an important contribution to the socio-economic development of the city and the Southern region."
