Avocado is a 'superfood' but what diseases should you avoid eating it?

People with kidney disease and acid reflux should avoid eating avocados.

Certain illnesses require avoiding avocados, including:

Blood clot

People with atrial fibrillation, blood clotting disorders, or those at risk of blood clots are often prescribed blood thinners. These medications help prevent blood clots from forming, thereby helping to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and pulmonary embolisms.

The medication works by reducing the effects of vitamin K in the body, thereby slowing down blood clotting. Some blood thinners, such as Warfarin, can interact with vitamin K. Therefore, patients should limit their intake of foods high in vitamin K, including avocados.

Kidney disease

People with early-stage kidney disease don't necessarily need to control their daily potassium intake. This is because at this stage, the kidneys can still process potassium in the blood effectively.

However, as kidney disease progresses to later stages, the kidneys' ability to filter potassium gradually decreases. This leads to potassium accumulation in the blood, resulting in the dangerous condition of hyperkalemia. Because avocados are rich in potassium, people with kidney disease need to be very cautious when consuming this fruit.

Reflux

In people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus, irritating the esophageal lining and leading to symptoms such as heartburn, reflux, nausea, hoarseness, and other symptoms. Butter, with its high fat content, can trigger these symptoms.

Foods high in fat, from fried foods to healthier options like avocados and walnuts, take longer to digest. Therefore, they remain in the stomach longer, leading to increased acid production. The more stomach acid produced, the more likely it is to cause reflux, according to Eat This, Not That!.
