Currently, the lotus growing area in Dong Thap province is more than 1,108 hectares, the lotus output by the end of October 2024 is estimated at 12,163 tons. The average lotus production cost is 9,204 VND/kg, the average selling price is 20,000 VND/kg, the average profit is more than 42 million VND/ha.


On average, planting 1 hectare of lotus for mirror, after 2.5 months the lotus is ready to harvest, estimated to last 2.5 months, on average each hectare of lotus for mirror gives a yield of 6-8 tons/ha.

Dong Thap has more than 100 products of food and cosmetics from lotus; 56 lotus products meet the standards of the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program from 3-4 stars and 1 lotus product meets the OCOP 5-star standard.

The annual production value of lotus products in Dong Thap province is over 1,900 billion VND.

Lotus industry is one of the five agricultural restructuring industries in Dong Thap province.

Developing lotus production associated with culture and tourism in a sustainable direction, aiming at green values, green growth, green environment and green culture; at the same time, combining to preserve traditional values ​​of culture, historical relics, traditional occupations and lifestyles of local people.

Lotus is grown most in Thap Muoi, Cao Lanh, Tam Nong and Thanh Binh districts of Dong Thap province.

Mr. Nguyen Truong An, a farmer in My Hoa commune, Thap Muoi district, switched to tourism from lotus fields.

Mr. An said that previously, growing lotus for shoots had unstable profits. Since converting 3 hectares of lotus to eco-tourism, taking advantage of lotus seeds, lotus leaves, lotus flowers to process and sell fresh lotus to tourists has increased profits compared to selling shoots and shoots.

Ms. Ho Thi Diem Thuy, in Thap Muoi district, said that seeing the abundant source of raw materials, she researched how to cook lotus seed milk to develop the economy.

Currently, she produces about 1,300 bottles of fresh lotus milk every day, bringing in a profit of about 400 million VND per year. Ms. Thuy plans to expand the production scale and research more deeply processed products such as powdered lotus milk.

Mr. Huynh Van Hiep, Director of Nam Huy Dong Thap Company Limited in Hoa Tan Commune, Chau Thanh District. Currently, Mr. Hiep's 5-star OCOP dried lotus seeds are consumed quite a lot in the provinces of the Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh City, the Central provinces, the capital Hanoi and present in Southeast Asian countries, the EU, Korea...

Currently, Dong Thap province has 22 establishments and enterprises producing a variety of products from parts of the lotus plant such as lotus leaves, lotus seeds, lotus flowers, lotus roots, lotus mirrors, lotus stems and lotus shoots.

Sen in Dong Thap is granted the Certificate of Right to Use the Certification Mark "Made in Dong Thap" for 4 lotus products such as: lotus root tea, lotus powdered milk, lotus leaf tea to maintain and enhance the reputation, prestige, product quality as well as contribute to promoting the image of Dong Thap lotus.

Dong Thap also develops a lotus growing area in Thap Muoi district with an area of ​​152 hectares as a tourist area, with 9 lotus tourist spots in 3 communes: My Hoa, Truong Xuan and Tan Kieu; lotus growing spots for experiential tourism.

By 2025, Dong Thap province aims to develop the lotus industry with an area of ​​1,400 hectares, with an estimated output of 1,148 tons. Expanding the production of specialized lotus varieties to serve different needs such as decorative flowers, seeds, shoots, leaves, high-end products, and lotus extracts.

Focus on research and accelerate the pilot project of 100 hectares of lotus growing area in Thap Muoi district to obtain lotus varieties suitable for natural conditions and expand production.

Develop at least 11 more lotus processed products ranked OCOP at the provincial level, reaching 60 OCOP lotus products by 2025; including at least 1 lotus extract product.
