The two rivals refused to shake hands, even though they were standing on platforms just a few steps apart in a studio without a live audience.
Biden, the 81-year-old Democratic candidate, posed the opening question and quickly criticized his predecessor for leading “an economy in freefall” and a pandemic that was “handled so badly that so many people died.”
Republican candidate Trump, 78, quickly countered that under his leadership from 2017-2021, "America had the greatest economy in the country's history" and that inflation under current President Biden is "killing" the superpower.
This is the first time in history that a sitting president has debated a former president in the context of a US presidential election.
This was the earliest ever live debate between the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates, even before each party's national convention.
According to the rules of CNN , the television channel organizing the first debate, the two candidates will stand face-to-face for the entire 90 minutes in a studio without an audience, without bringing any documents, except for a glass of water, a blank sheet of paper, and a pen.
Popular talk show hosts Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will moderate the debate at 8:00 AM on June 28th (Vietnam time).
According to analysts, the main debate topics in the first election will range from domestic policies such as economic efficiency, inflation, immigration, abortion, and the health of election candidates, to foreign issues such as views on the Middle East crisis, the conflict in Ukraine, or the conflict between Israel and the Hamas Islamic Movement…
Current President Biden, 81, may raise many questions about the role of Donald Trump, 78, in the January 2020 riots that stormed the Capitol, Trump's attempts to change the results of the election four years ago, or the series of criminal lawsuits the former US president is currently facing.
For his part, Republican candidate Donald Trump is expected to focus on President Biden's health and advanced age, the record-high inflation and public debt in the US during the current term, and the White House's "clumsy" handling of the Hamas-Israel conflict.
Another "hot" topic of concern to voters is the nearly diametrically opposed views of the two candidates on foreign policy, immigration, and border security.
Opinion polls released just before the debate showed the two candidates were very close to each other.
According to a joint New York Times/Siena College poll, former President Trump is leading in national approval ratings with 49%, compared to incumbent President Biden's 47%.
Meanwhile, Fox News polls show Republican candidate Donald Trump maintaining a slight lead in battleground states, but support for Democratic candidate Joe Biden has been steadily increasing in recent months.
Millions of Americans are watching a debate unfold in what promises to be a fiercely contested election summer, in a deeply polarized and tense America still wounded by the chaos and violence that accompanied the 2020 election.
