At a meeting of the National Assembly's Defense Committee on December 5, South Korean Army Chief Park An-su, who was appointed as the commander of martial law on December 3, announced that he had submitted his resignation to the Ministry of Defense on December 4. The Ministry is currently reviewing his request.
The South Korean Army Commander affirmed absolute loyalty and patriotism. The military forces are still serving on the front lines, sincerely protecting national security.

At the same time, Park affirmed that he had informed Police Chief Cho Ji-ho about the martial law order via the former minister's mobile phone as ordered.
During the period of martial law imposed by President Yoon Suk-yeol, South Korean Army Commander Park An-su ordered an increased deployment of police forces and instructed security forces not to use tasers or uncased ammunition to ensure public safety.
On the evening of December 3rd, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol unexpectedly declared martial law, accusing the opposition of paralyzing the government 's functions through impeachment efforts and budget manipulation. This marks the first time since 1980 that South Korea has implemented such a measure.
The imposition of martial law quickly sent shockwaves both domestically and internationally, marking one of the biggest political crises in South Korea's recent history. Many high-ranking officials, including Chief of Staff to the President Chung Jin Suk and National Security Advisor Shin Won Sik, resigned.
In the early hours of December 4th, just hours after the order was issued, the South Korean National Assembly held an emergency session with a 100% consensus, and a resolution demanding the lifting of martial law was passed.
Speaker of the National Assembly Woo Won Sik emphasized, " The declaration of martial law is something no one wants. The National Assembly needs to react quickly to protect democracy." The South Korean constitution stipulates that martial law must be lifted if a majority of National Assembly representatives request it.
At 4:30 a.m. on December 4th, President Yoon Suk-yeol announced the lifting of martial law, just six hours after it was imposed. In a statement that same day, he called on the National Assembly to end its “irresponsible” actions and affirmed that he would continue to lead the country during this difficult period.
