Despite rumors about ByteDance potentially acquiring TikTok, the world's richest billionaire, Elon Musk, has just stated that he is not interested in the Chinese app.
Billionaire Elon Musk has stated that he is not interested in buying TikTok, the popular short- video app that the US is trying to ban due to national security concerns. Musk's comments were published by The WELT Group, a division of the German media company Axel Springer SE, over the weekend.
Billionaire Elon Musk is not keen on the possibility of acquiring TikTok.
"I haven't made an offer to buy TikTok," said the owner of the famous car company Tesla a week after US President Donald Trump said he was willing to let Musk buy the app owned by ByteDance if the billionaire wanted to.
"I have no plans for what I would do if I owned TikTok," the head of social media platform X revealed, adding that he doesn't use the short-video app and isn't familiar with its format.
According to the world's richest billionaire, he is not keen on the prospect of acquiring TikTok and is not interested in acquiring companies in general. His previous multi-billion dollar acquisition of the social media platform Twitter, later renamed X, was quite rare. "I usually build companies from scratch," Musk explained.
President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order delaying the enforcement of a ban on the popular short-video app, which was scheduled to shut down on January 19.
ByteDance was given 75 days by President Trump to sell its TikTok assets in the United States or face a ban after lawmakers expressed concerns that the app posed a national security risk. Lawmakers alleged that China could force the company to share data from US users. TikTok has denied that it has or will share US user data.
US President Donald Trump has made no secret of his support if Musk were to acquire ByteDance's social media platform.
Since January 19th, Apple and Google have not restored TikTok on their app stores, after the law took effect a day before President Trump returned to the White House. Over the weekend, TikTok announced it would allow Android users in the US to download and connect to the app through product packages on its website, in an attempt to circumvent restrictions on the popular platform in the country.
Mr. Trump has said he is in talks with several people about buying TikTok and may make a decision on the app's future in February 2025. ByteDance's platform has approximately 170 million users in the US.
Last week, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to establish a national investment fund this year, saying it has the potential to buy TikTok.
Trump's decision to save TikTok represents a reversal of his stance during his first term, when he failed to ban the app due to concerns that ByteDance was sharing Americans' personal information with the Chinese government .
Recently, Mr. Trump revealed that he "has a warm place in his heart for TikTok," noting that the app helped him win the support of young voters in the presidential election in early November 2024.
