On May 29th, in New York, USA, the United Nations Security Council held an Arria-format meeting on the situation in Myanmar, attended by representatives from many UN member states, including all 15 Security Council members and 10 ASEAN countries.
At the meeting, most countries expressed deep concern about the escalating conflict in Myanmar, which has resulted in a tremendous loss of civilian lives and forced many to flee their homes and seek refuge.
Countries emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire, an end to violence, protection of civilians, especially women and children, and ensuring timely humanitarian assistance for the people.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Counselor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, emphasized that any solution to the situation in Myanmar must ensure respect for the independence, sovereignty , territorial integrity, and self-determination of the people of Myanmar; with the top priority currently being to promote a nationwide ceasefire among all relevant parties and prevent a humanitarian disaster.

These are necessary and urgent steps to build trust and genuine dialogue among stakeholders, towards achieving a sustainable solution to the Myanmar issue.
The Vietnamese representative affirmed that the Five-Point Consensus continues to be the most fundamental and appropriate framework for resolving the Myanmar issue, with ASEAN continuing to play a central role, alongside the efforts and contributions of each member, including Vietnam. The United Nations needs to support ASEAN in this process, contributing to creating a favorable environment for achieving the lasting peace that the people of Myanmar desire and deserve.
On this occasion, Vietnam welcomes the appointment of Ms. Julie Bishop as Special Envoy for Myanmar by the UN Secretary-General, and hopes that she will cooperate closely with the ASEAN Chair's Special Envoy to promote the resolution of the current crisis in Myanmar through dialogue and mutual understanding.
