Vietnam affirms Asia-Pacific's position in sustainable development

Vietnam pledges to cooperate closely with the United States and other member countries to jointly address common issues, towards a world of peace, prosperity and sustainable development for all.

According to a VNA reporter in Washington, on October 16, Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung delivered a keynote speech opening the first Potomac Dialogue organized by the Asia -Pacific Strategy Center.

The Potomac Dialogue 2025, themed “Bridging the Gap: The Asia- Pacific ’s Vital Role in Global Security and Economic Stability,” aims to promote open, inclusive, and substantive dialogue among stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region, enhance understanding, cooperation, and shared responsibility, and promote cooperation to effectively respond to the region’s challenges and opportunities.

The forum was attended by more than 100 delegates, including Ambassadors/Representatives of Embassies of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member countries in the US, scholars from US, European and Asian policy research organizations, former government officials, US and Asia-Pacific businesses.

Speaking at the opening session, Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung affirmed that the Asia-Pacific region is facing profound changes in global politics and economics, with intertwined challenges such as strategic competition, protectionism, supply chain disruption, climate change and non-traditional security instability.

However, this is also a dynamic region, accounting for more than 60% of global GDP and playing a pivotal role in growth, innovation and international economic integration.

The Ambassador stressed that to overcome the current “headwinds”, economies need to strengthen dialogue, cooperation and respect for international law, while taking the lead in digital transformation, innovation, green and inclusive development.

He also acknowledged the extremely important role of APEC and ASEAN in promoting multilateral cooperation, maintaining peace, stability and sustainable development.

The Ambassador said that in 2027, Vietnam will assume the role of APEC Chair for the third time with the theme "Connecting, building inclusive and resilient economies" on Phu Quoc Island, An Giang Province.

Hosting APEC 2027, Vietnam pledges to work closely with the US and other member countries to address common issues, promote dialogue and strengthen multilateral cooperation, towards a world of peace, prosperity and sustainable development for all.

After the opening session, the forum continued with four lively discussions by speakers on challenges, opportunities and solutions for the Asia-Pacific region./.
