According to Reuters, the World Health Organization (WHO) said it has detected several contaminated cough syrups and suspensions in the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and the Western Pacific .
The WHO stated that the affected products were all manufactured by Pharmix Laboratories (Pakistan) and were first detected in the Maldives and Pakistan. Some contaminated products also appeared in Belize, Fiji, and Laos.
According to the WHO, some medications (syrups containing active ingredients to treat certain medical conditions) contain ethylene glycol in excess of permissible levels. The WHO recommends that countries increase vigilance and inspect products manufactured by Pharmix Laboratories between December 2021 and December 2022.
According to the WHO, a total of 23 batches of Alergo syrup, Emidone suspension, Mucorid syrup, Ulcofin suspension, and Zincell syrup are affected. Currently, Alergo syrup is the only product found to be affected outside of Pakistan.
