According to the book Dien Hai Citadel - History of architecture and its role in the fight against Western invaders in Da Nang (1858 - 1860) co-authored by Mr. Huynh Dinh Quoc Thien and researcher Nguyen Quang Trung Tien (published by Da Nang Publishing House in 2020), the flagpole of Dien Hai Citadel when it was first built was located on the north side, as shown in the drawing dated July 2, 1823 stored at the French Institute of the Far East. However, since 1824, the Hue court has issued a regulation that Dien Hai Citadel must be in the group that must build a flagpole and flagpole on the south side of the citadel, close to the citadel wall and facing inland.
Regulations on Dien Hai citadel of the Nguyen dynasty show that the original main axis of the citadel faced south, the flagpole was initially located close to the northern wall, from 1824 the flagpole was moved to the southern wall according to official regulations of the Hue court.
