2.5 points in 3 subjects still passed grade 10 of public school, why?

(Dan Tri) - According to the second round of enrollment announcement of Nam Dan 2 High School (Nghe An province), the admission score for grade 10 is 2.5 points. Thus, candidates with less than 1 point in each subject will be admitted to public schools.

Nam Dan 2 High School has just announced the admission scores and enrollment schedule for the second round of admissions to 10th grade for the 2025-2026 school year.

The cutoff score for admission in the second round is 2.5 points (including priority and bonus points, if any). Eligible applicants are students with a total admission score of 2.5 points or higher who submitted their first-choice application to the school but were not admitted in the first round.

The fact that a local public school, considered a "place of learning," has an admission cutoff score of only 2.5 points, meaning less than 1 point per subject, has raised concerns among many.

Mr. Pham Xuan Phu, Principal of Nam Dan 2 High School, confirmed that the cutoff score for the second round of admissions for the school is 2.5 points. Meanwhile, the cutoff score for the first round was 9.5 points.

According to Mr. Phu, the sharp drop in cutoff scores is "due to specific circumstances."

For the 2025-2026 school year, the Nghe An Department of Education and Training assigned the school a target of enrolling 450 students for 10 tenth-grade classes. However, only 419 applications were received, so the enrollment target was adjusted to 400.

In the entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year at Nam Dan 2 High School, one student achieved a score of 27.75 points.

Following the 10th grade entrance exam, some candidates changed their preferences, resulting in 442 applications. Therefore, Nam Dan 2 High School further adjusted its enrollment quota to 450.

"Due to a shortfall compared to the enrollment target, the school is announcing a second round of admissions. According to the admissions regulations, candidates who did not violate exam regulations and did not have failing grades will be selected from highest to lowest scores until the target is met," Mr. Phu informed.

With the second round of cutoff scores, 31 candidates qualified for admission.

Nam Dan 2 High School was also the scene of a controversy involving a supervisor's remarks during the first exam of the 2025-2026 10th grade entrance exam. When a student asked for extra exam paper, male supervisor TVD said: "Why study so much when you'll end up working as a laborer or factory worker?" Teacher D later explained that he was joking with the other supervisor in the exam room and did not intend to insult the student.

Responding to concerns about the quality of training due to low entrance exam scores, Mr. Phu argued that low scores may not be entirely due to the students' abilities, but in some cases, external factors such as health problems during the exam. However, the principal also stated that "if a child is weak, the parents must take better care of them."

For the 2024-2025 school year, the cutoff score for 10th grade at Nam Dan 2 High School is 13.2 points, with 500 candidates admitted out of a total of 720 applicants.

Statistics show that the average entrance exam scores for 10th grade in Nghe An province for the 2025-2026 school year have decreased compared to last year.

For example, Ha Huy Tap High School's cutoff score for the first round was 17.75 points, and for the second round was 17.5 points, while the cutoff score for the 2024-2025 school year is 21 points. Le Viet Thuat High School's cutoff score is 15.25 points, 6.4 points lower than the previous school year (21.65 points for the first round). These two schools are located in a favorable area (formerly Vinh City).

For schools in rural areas, such as Thai Lao High School, the cutoff score is 11.75 points, 7 points lower than the previous school year. Le Hong Phong High School has a cutoff score of 10 points, 6.5 points lower than the 2024-2025 school year.

The cutoff score for Nghi Loc 3 High School is 11.25 points, while the cutoff score (round 1) for the 2024-2025 school year is 17.75 points and the cutoff score for round 5 is 16.6 points...
