“This is the Voice of Vietnam, broadcasting from Hanoi – the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam” – this short, heroic, and sacred announcement marked the first broadcast of the Voice of Vietnam Radio at 11:30 AM on September 7, 1945, as per President Ho Chi Minh's directive.
This event marked the birth of Vietnam's revolutionary broadcasting industry. It was the first media outlet of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam to broadcast President Ho Chi Minh 's Declaration of Independence – read by him at Ba Dinh Square on September 2, 1945. This event ushered in a new era in revolutionary information and propaganda work.
Over 80 years of development, the broadcasting industry has continuously innovated, applied modern technology, and expanded its scope from radio waves and terrestrial television to digital platforms. The industry's role is increasingly affirmed in transmitting official information, shaping public opinion, educating the public, and serving foreign affairs.
In Hai Phong, on May 14, 1955, the temporary broadcasting station located at the Hai Phong City Theater relayed radio programs from the Voice of Vietnam, and in the afternoon, for about half an hour, broadcast local radio programs.
Recognizing the role, position, and importance of propaganda work, Hai Phong Radio Station was established and officially renamed Hai Phong Radio and Television Station on March 8, 1985.
In the former Hai Duong province, the Hai Duong Town Radio Station was also established early on (February 25, 1957), laying the foundation for the birth of the radio and television industry in Hai Duong province. Throughout its development, the Hai Phong City Radio and Television Station and the former Hai Duong province have made many significant contributions to the information and propaganda work, contributing to the protection and development of the homeland and the country.
In the process of streamlining the administrative apparatus, the Hai Phong City Press and Media Center and the Hai Duong Provincial Newspaper and Radio and Television Station merged to form the Hai Phong Newspaper and Radio and Television Station from July 1, 2025. From this point on, the Hai Phong City radio and television industry will gain additional strength to better meet the demands of the new situation and make a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of the "Culturally Rich Eastern Region - Heroic Port City".
The past 80 years have been a challenging yet glorious journey for the Vietnamese broadcasting industry in general and Hai Phong city's broadcasting in particular. The Hai Phong broadcasting workforce has grown increasingly mature and professional. The media system is diverse in type and rich in publications. The city's broadcasting has been and continues to make a positive contribution to the industrialization and modernization process, accompanying the comprehensive development of the port city – one of the country's important economic growth poles.
Comrade Nguyen Van Loi, former Deputy Secretary of the Vinh Bao District Party Committee, stated that the city's radio and television are important information channels, contributing to shaping public opinion and bringing the Party and State's guidelines and policies to the people quickly and directly.
Every step in Hai Phong's development, from urban construction and industrial development to port construction and the improvement of cultural and spiritual life, has been accompanied, encouraged, and strongly influenced by radio and television. The quality of programs is increasingly professional, with diverse content and modern, creative presentation.
"In the context of integration, I believe that we need to continue to have many high-quality journalistic works that spread across digital platforms, affirming the brand of Hai Phong. However, no matter how things change, the core remains political integrity, humanism, and creativity," Comrade Nguyen Van Loi shared.

Constant innovation
In the context of the digital age, digital transformation is an urgent requirement, and Hai Phong's broadcasting and television station has been constantly innovating, making the most of technological platforms to meet the information needs of the public.
The channels of Hai Phong Newspaper and Radio and Television are known to audiences nationwide through the infrastructure of VTVCab, SCTV, VTC, DTV Northern, AVG, VINASAT-1 satellite (VTC digital), and OTT applications such as: THP On, VNPT (MyTV), FPT (FPT Play), Vietel (TV360), VieON, ClipTV, K+…
Hai Phong Radio and Television attracts a large number of viewers through its websites thhp.vn, thhp3.vn, the THP On app, THP fanpages, THPTube, Zalo, and TikTok... And especially the launch of the THP On app contributes to accelerating the digital transformation process of Hai Phong's newspapers and radio and television, expanding its influence, and enhancing its position and competitiveness in the field of radio and television nationwide.
Despite the tireless efforts of journalists, the broadcasting industry is currently facing fierce competition from digital media platforms. This competition is not only about content and format, but also about "sharing" the audience – a crucial resource for traditional news organizations.
This situation poses numerous challenges for the broadcasting industry nationwide in general and in Hai Phong in particular. However, it also presents an opportunity to redefine its role, promote innovation in thinking, technology, and journalistic practices in the digital age.
To meet the growing demands of the public, Hai Phong's newspapers, radio, and television are focusing on developing digital content on online platforms; expanding coverage and improving signal quality; and collaborating with major broadcasters to enhance the quality of media products.

In particular, Resolution 57 on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation is creating an important foundation for the broadcasting industry to keep pace with new trends. Units need to accelerate the application of AI, Big Data, and VR/AR in content production and distribution; develop high-quality human resources, enhance digital skills for reporters and editors; and strengthen cooperation with technology companies, training institutions, and partners for mutual development.
Looking back on 80 glorious years, those working in radio and television today are even more proud and motivated to continue innovating, creating, and proactively adapting to the digital age – maintaining their role as the trusted voice of the Party, the State, and the people.
