(NLDO)- On December 5, in Da Nang City, the 168th ceremony to return the remains of American soldiers missing in action in the Vietnam War (MIA) took place.
The ceremony was attended by the Board of Directors of the Vietnam Office for Searching for Missing Persons (VNOSMP) and representatives of the Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Public Security . On the US side, there were Deputy Ambassador to Vietnam Courtney Beale, the head of the US MIA Office, and US MIA experts participating in the 157th joint search (October to December 2024).
The 168th Ceremony to Return the Remains of US Soldiers Missing in Action in Vietnam
At the ceremony, the Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Persons (VNOSMP) handed over to the US side two boxes containing remains. This is the result of unilateral excavation activities carried out by Vietnam in the Quang Ninh and Yen Bai areas during the 157th search.
Previously, on December 3, the remains were examined by Vietnamese and American forensic experts and concluded that they may be related to American soldiers missing in action during the war in Vietnam. Accordingly, they will be transferred to Hawaii, USA for further verification.
Humanitarian cooperation activities to search for and account for US soldiers missing in action during the war in Vietnam were implemented by the two countries immediately after the Paris Agreement was signed in 1973. To date, positive results have been achieved, such as identifying and handing over more than 730 cases of US soldiers missing after the war.
In the context of the two countries having just established a comprehensive strategic partnership in September 2023, this activity continues to receive more attention and promotion, becoming an important and fundamental pillar of cooperation, not only demonstrating the humanitarian spirit of the Vietnamese people but also helping to heal the wounds of war, strengthen trust and goodwill, creating conditions for further deepening the Vietnam - US cooperation relationship in many fields.
