On February 26th, the first ever Hai Duong Province Cultural Heritage Connection Cross-Country Race took place at the Con Son - Kiet Bac historical site. This year's inaugural event attracted over 850 professional, semi-professional, and amateur athletes competing in three distances: 5 km, 10 km, and 15 km.
In the men's 15km professional category, national athletics team athlete Nguyen Trung Cuong finished first, completing the race faster than usual for a surprising reason.
"The course today was quite beautiful. The special thing was that I was running when a dog chased me. From a pace of 3:20, I suddenly dropped to a pace under 3 when the dog chased me, and from there I finished with a good time of 47 minutes and 38 seconds," shared Nguyen Trung Cuong.
Trung Cuong was surprised by his better-than-usual performance.
On social media, fans also found a video capturing a humorous incident involving the runner. As he ran through a residential area, a rather large dog suddenly jumped out from a house, forcing Trung Cuong to speed up and run away. Fortunately, this sudden increase in speed did not significantly affect the national track and field athlete's stamina or performance.
Being chased by dogs at marathons is not uncommon. Last year, Kenyan runner Robert Kimutai Ngeno, who was leading, dropped to third place in the Buenos Aires marathon for the same reason.
Robert Kimutai Ngeno was leading the race halfway through. However, at kilometer 38, a dog suddenly appeared, barking loudly and chasing the 29-year-old runner. Kgeno had a hard time escaping the dog. After the incident, he lost his focus and finished in third place overall.
