On the afternoon of August 22, the Da Nang City People's Court concluded the first-instance trial, sentencing Nguyen Van Son (29 years old) to 12 years and 9 months in prison, Nguyen Van Tu (31 years old) to 6 years in prison, both for organizing illegal entry for others, and Nguyen Van Dong (46 years old, also residing in Bac Giang ) to 6 months in prison for making false declarations.
According to the indictment, in late June 2021, an unidentified Chinese national agreed to bring eight other Chinese nationals into Vietnam illegally to work for high wages.

This group of Chinese people gathered at the northern border, walking along forest trails, and were transported down to the main road by many people using motorcycles and cars.
On the evening of June 28, 2021, an unidentified man contacted Son via Zalo to pick up eight Chinese nationals who had illegally crossed the border into Vietnam, passing through Bac Giang province, and then transport them to Da Nang city, for a flat fee of 96 million VND.
Son called Tu, prepared two 4-seater cars, and after picking up eight Chinese people, Son received an advance payment through his bank account.
On the way to Da Nang City, Son drove ahead, with Tu following behind, both maintaining a distance of 50-100 meters.
At approximately 5:00 AM on June 30, 2021, as the two vehicles passed through the Hai Van road tunnel (Da Nang City), Son informed the person who hired him and received the full payment of 96 million VND.
On their way to the handover location for the Chinese nationals, Son and Tu discovered a Covid-19 checkpoint and sought an alternative route into Da Nang City. When they reached the DT602 road in Hoa Son commune (Hoa Vang district, Da Nang City), their two cars were stopped and inspected by a Covid-19 checkpoint manned by the Hoa Vang District Police.
Tú immediately sped away on his motorbike, and Sơn also fled in a different direction. Upon reaching Hòa Liên commune (Hòa Vang district), Sơn forced the four Chinese men out of the car and drove away, escaping to Bắc Giang.
Meanwhile, Tú fled to Hòa Sơn commune, forced the four Chinese men off the vehicle, and drove back to his hometown to evade capture.
All eight Chinese nationals were discovered by locals, who reported them to the police and detained them. Through investigation, the Da Nang City Police identified Son and Tu and summoned them. After Son was arrested, Tu told the story to his uncle, Nguyen Van Dong.
Tu and Dong conspired and agreed on the content of their false declarations to create an alibi for Tu, avoiding investigation into the illegal entry case and hindering the investigation by authorities.
